Brandes–Fleischer sampled-pair current-flow betweenness

Algorithms AIMech:BrandesFleischerSampledCurrentFlowBetweenness DRAFT
Aliases: Brandes-Fleischer current-flow betweenness approximation
A randomized network-analysis algorithm that estimates normalized, endpoint-excluded current-flow betweenness by independently sampling uniform source–sink pairs, solving their grounded electrical-network systems, and averaging scaled vertex throughputs.
Identity Notes & Concept Scope Compared all 442 pinned AIO and 688 native identities; no normalized match. Ignored- and hidden-inclusive searches of three full checkouts returned 89,0,0 lines, read as the exact-current record/report and prior chapter leads or query strings. Semantic assessment covered 147 AIO and 522 native definitions: all 147 AIO and 521 prior native rows verified unchanged and one newly selected native row read. Nine complete AIO contexts and six full native neighbors were assessed. Algorithm 3 independently samples source–sink pairs and averages scaled electrical throughputs. This differs from Algorithm 1’s exact sorted-row aggregation, grounded resistance-sum closeness, shortest-path dependency accumulation and source-pivot distance or dependency estimation. It estimates a structural graph score, not a causal influence model or a learned predictor.

Claims & Grounded Evidence

6 Claims
Scope #domain-and-target
The maintained domain is a simple connected undirected graph with n>=3 and positive edge conductances. For ordered distinct source–sink vertices s,t, potentials satisfy Lp=e_s-e_t and edge current is c(u,v)[p(u)-p(v)]. Throughput tau_st(v) is half the incident absolute current minus half the absolute supply; source and sink throughputs are zero. The target B(v) sums throughputs over ordered pairs and divides by (n-1)(n-2). Edge orientation is only a computational convention.
Mechanism #independent-pair-estimator
Draw k>=1 ordered pairs uniformly from the n(n-1) distinct-endpoint pairs, independently with replacement across iterations. Solve each grounded unit-supply system. For nonendpoints accumulate half the incident absolute current; endpoints contribute zero. With a=n/(n-2), return Bhat(v)=a/k times the sum of sampled throughputs. Under exact currents its expectation is B(v). Independence concerns pair draws, not the different vertices estimated from one shared draw.
Scope #absolute-error-guarantee
Each throughput lies in [0,1]. For epsilon>0 and exact currents, a fixed vertex has probability at most 2 exp[-2k(epsilon/a)^2] of absolute error at least epsilon. A union bound gives simultaneous error below epsilon for every vertex with failure at most delta when k>=ceil[a^2 ln(2n/delta)/(2 epsilon^2)], where 0<delta<1. This explicit sufficient count is curator algebra, not an optimal count. The source uses k=ell ceil[(a/epsilon)^2 ln n]; for positive integer ell this yields the stated per-vertex 2/n^(2ell) bound and, by a union bound, all-vertex 2/n^(2ell-1). These are additive guarantees, not relative-error or rank-preservation guarantees.
Limitation #sample-range-and-repetition
Although the exact normalized score is at most one, an individual estimate can exceed one because a sampled contribution is scaled by a. On the unit three-vertex path, the middle single-draw contribution is 3 with probability 1/3 and zero otherwise. For two draws, its estimate is 0, 3/2 or 3 with probabilities 4/9, 4/9 and 1/9, while its expectation and exact score are one. Hypothetically clipping to one changes this expectation to 5/9 and is not part of the maintained method. Repetition remains possible when k equals the number of distinct pairs; that sample size does not imply exact enumeration. These are curator finite examples.
Limitation #solver-and-work-boundary
The procedure performs k grounded Laplacian solves and O(km) work to aggregate edge currents. The source proposes conjugate gradients to avoid the dense inverse used by its separate exact sorted-row algorithm. Its displayed condition-number runtime does not specify a numerical tolerance. Sampling concentration assumes exact throughputs; approximate-solver error requires additional analysis and is not covered by that probability bound. No unconditional exact floating-point runtime, solver accuracy or implementation-independent memory guarantee is asserted.
Limitation #evidence-and-method-boundary
This is the chapter’s sampled-pair Algorithm 3, distinct from exact sorted-row betweenness, grounded closeness, shortest-path dependency accumulation and sampling source pivots for shortest-path centrality. Appendix A describes an ell=1 Java approximation experiment, and Figure 1 presents maximum absolute errors for six random and six AS graphs. This record asserts no digitized numerical advantage, replicated benchmark, causal influence or learned predictive performance. The paper’s phrase fully polynomial randomized approximation scheme is not treated as a relative-error theorem.

Artificial Intelligence Ontology (AIO) Grounding

Explicit AIO Snapshot Assessment: No Match

Rationale: No examined AIO target denotes this randomized current-flow centrality estimator. Random sampling, graph inputs and ranking outputs do not by themselves identify it with a bias, clustering task, language model or deep active learning.

Search Scope: Compared all 442 pinned AIO and 688 preceding native identities, with full-checkout text searches including ignored and hidden files. Semantic context comprises 147 AIO and 522 native definitions, with prior rows verified unchanged and the new exact-current algorithm read. Nine complete AIO contexts and six full native neighbors were assessed.
Examined AIO Candidate Rejection Reason
AIO:Clustering A centrality vector assigns scores without grouping vertices into clusters.
AIO:UnsupervisedClustering Absence of labels does not turn structural score computation into clustering.
AIO:MathematicalFunction The identity is a specific pair-sampling and electrical-solve procedure, not solely a rule defining an input-output function.
AIO:DataPreparation Computing network prominence is the defined result; incidental downstream feature use does not establish a preprocessing identity.
AIO:GraphLanguageModel The electrical-network computation has no language-model input/output or training mechanism.
AIO:RankingBias A structural graph score is not the belief that high-ranked information is necessarily relevant.
AIO:SelectionAndSamplingBias The estimator’s specified independent uniform pair sampling is a method, not the bias concept caused by nonrepresentative selection.
AIO:RepresentationBias A graph centrality computation is not subgroup representation bias.
AIO:DeepActiveLearning Neither labels nor a deep neural network are acquired or fitted.
