Depth-Gated LSTM
Architectures AIMech:DepthGatedLSTM DRAFT
Aliases: DGLSTM, Depth-gated long short-term memory
A stacked LSTM architecture that adds a learned, elementwise gated contribution from the current lower-layer memory cell to the upper-layer cell update alongside its temporal memory and input paths.
Identity Notes & Concept Scope
Compared all 442 pinned AIO and 611 native IDs, names, aliases and scoped synonyms; no normalized identity match. Ignored- and hidden-inclusive fixed-string searches of the recovery, older discovery and original Documents checkouts returned 6, 0, 0 lines. All distinct match contents were inspected. Semantic matching covered 24 AIO and 51 native definitions, with every matched definition read. 5 full annotated AIO node/edge/generated contexts and 2 full native records were inspected. DGLSTM adds gated current lower-cell memory directly to the upper cell. It is not an alias for ordinary hidden-state stacking, Grid LSTM separate dimensional memory flows, or GF-RNN delayed globally gated hidden projections. Its first-layer observation carry and task-specific attention/reranking configurations remain explicitly scoped.

Mechanism
#adjacent-cell-depth-carry
The depth gate depends on the current upper-layer input, the previous upper-layer memory and the current lower-layer memory. The upper cell adds the depth-gated lower cell to its usual forget-gated previous cell and input-gated candidate. This direct cell connection supplements the ordinary lower-hidden-to-upper-input connection; it does not merely gate the lower hidden output. Lower-layer cells are computed before the corresponding upper-layer update at the same time step.
Scope
#coupled-gates-and-gradient-boundary
The described application couples the ordinary forget and input gates as f=1-i, while the extra depth gate is computed separately. The full cell update therefore need not be a convex combination of its memory and candidate inputs. Holding gates fixed exposes a linear direct cell path, but the gate also depends on cell values and the upper input can depend on the lower state. The full derivative is not just the gate value, and sigmoid gates alone do not guarantee contraction, nonvanishing gradients or successful optimization.
Scope
#first-layer-and-width-scope
The paper also proposes a gated projection of observations into the first-layer cell, a distinct boundary construction from carrying a lower LSTM cell. It says the lower-cell weight in the gate should become a matrix when adjacent cell widths differ. That change defines the gate input transform; the displayed elementwise lower-cell addition still needs compatible dimensions or a further specified carry transform. This record does not invent that transform or infer implementation behavior from the uninspected linked code.
Limitation
#translation-depth-comparisons
The BTEC Chinese-to-English translation comparison uses an attention-based system with learned source word embeddings and recurrent decoding; it does not use a recurrent source encoder in this experiment. With two-hundred-dimensional hidden layers, DGLSTM scores above the listed LSTM and GRU comparators at depths three, five and ten, but its own BLEU score decreases as depth increases. The source reports 44,016 training, 1,006 validation and 506 test sentence pairs. These selected settings do not establish monotonic depth benefit or universal superiority.
Limitation
#reranking-protocol-and-arithmetic
The reranking experiment uses scores from two attention DGLSTM models with three and five layers of fifty hidden units, fits a reranker on development data, and evaluates reranked one-hundred-best lists with one reference, averaging ten repetitions. It is separate from the two-hundred-hidden-unit comparison. Table 2 gives test BLEU 43.08 versus 40.63, a difference of 2.45 points; the prose instead says three points. The record retains the table arithmetic without treating that prose value as an exact measured difference.
Limitation
#language-model-evidence-scope
The Penn Treebank experiment uses a two-layer model with two hundred hidden units per layer and reports test perplexity 96 against the listed comparison values 123, 117, 110 and 108. These are the short note’s selected reported results, not a current ranking or a controlled replication of every comparator. The note does not fully specify an executable training and evaluation protocol, and the finite language-model and translation experiments do not prove broad optimization or generalization guarantees.
⚠️ Curated Limitations & Negative Results
- Direct lower-cell carry, ordinary hidden-state stacking and delayed gated feedback are different mechanisms; related Grid and highway descriptions do not make them interchangeable aliases.
- Coupled ordinary gates do not normalize the additional depth contribution. Input-dependent gates and other paths affect the full Jacobian.
- Unequal-width carry details and the linked implementation were not verified. First-layer projected-input gating is an explicitly scoped extension.
- Translation depth comparisons, reranking and language modeling use different protocols. The table-derived reranking gain differs from the prose.
- All six pages of arXiv1508.03790v4 visually read, including equations, tables, figures and references. No author code, other versions, training or benchmark replication; DRAFT remains.
