Exponential natural evolution strategies

Algorithms AIMech:ExponentialNaturalEvolutionStrategies DRAFT
A Gaussian black-box optimization algorithm that adapts a search mean and full covariance factor from ranked samples in local standard-normal coordinates, using a transported mean step and separate exponential global-scale and matrix-shape updates.
Identity Notes & Concept Scope The original 2010 full-covariance Gaussian population update is a concrete NES variant with transported mean and separate exponential scale/shape updates. The maintained NES family expressly reserves executable xNES/SNES rules; its Fisher/score framework and optional rank shaping do not already curate this finite update. xNES is also distinct from the maintained 2001 evolution-path CMA-ES and from generic IGO flow. Current bounded identity assessment covers730native and442pinnedAIO records and four ignored/hidden-inclusive checkout scans; all2900matches were reconciled. Existing frontier owner193 is retained in place, without a duplicate leaf. The premerge collection and actual creation freshness checks remain separately recorded.

Claims & Grounded Evidence

Mechanism #gaussian-ranked-generations
Maintain a Gaussian search distribution in d-dimensional real space through a mean mu and a nonsingular real matrix A, with covariance C=A*A^T. At each generation, draw independent standard normal vectors z_i, form x_i=mu+A*z_i and evaluate their black-box fitness. Rank the paired samples from best to worst for the chosen maximization convention and assign the configured rank utilities u_i. Algorithm 1 generates a new population each iteration; it uses objective evaluations rather than derivatives of the objective. The search distribution is not a predictive model of objective values.
Mechanism #natural-score-decomposition
Use the sampled standard coordinates to compute g=sum_i u_i*z_i and Delta=sum_i u_i*(z_i*z_i^T-I), in the natural-score normalization of Algorithm 1. Split Delta into the scalar a=tr(Delta)/d and the symmetric trace-free matrix H=Delta-a*I. Represent A=sigma*B, initializing sigma=abs(det(A))^(1/d) and B=A/sigma. Then sigma is positive and abs(det(B))=1; a positive-determinant initial factor gives det(B)=1. Rank utilities replace raw fitness weights and need not give an unbiased gradient estimate of raw expected fitness.
Mechanism #finite-exponential-factor-update
With configured learning rates eta_mu, eta_sigma and eta_B, Algorithm 1 updates mu_new=mu+eta_mu*sigma*B*g, sigma_new=sigma*exp(eta_sigma*a/2), and B_new=B*exp(eta_B*H/2). The mean step uses the generation's original sigma and B. The shape exponential is a matrix exponential, whereas the global scale uses the scalar exponential. All scores come from the same sampled generation. When eta_sigma=eta_B=eta_A, the scale and shape updates combine to A_new=A*exp(eta_A*Delta/2). Different block learning rates rescale the components and do not generally give one scalar multiple of the complete natural-gradient direction.
Scope #positive-covariance-and-shape-normalization
For a nonsingular initial factor, finite learning rates and finite symmetric score matrices, the matrix exponential in the factor update is invertible and the scalar scale multiplier is positive. The resulting covariance sigma_new^2*B_new*B_new^T therefore remains positive definite in exact arithmetic. Since H has zero trace, det(exp(eta_B*H/2))=1, preserving the normalized absolute determinant of B. The factor itself need not stay symmetric. These domain-preservation statements do not establish fitness improvement or protection against floating-point overflow, underflow and ill-conditioning.
Scope #qualified-affine-and-rank-equivariance
For an invertible affine change of search coordinates y=L*x+b, the concrete full-factor update is equivariant when the initial mean and factor transform as L*mu+b and L*A, samples correspond, and the same learning rates and rank utilities are used. Any constraints and stopping policy also need corresponding transformation for a whole search to agree. Strictly increasing fitness transformations preserve the ranking and existing ties with a consistent tie policy. This is not a claim that arbitrary finite updates are invariant under nonlinear parameter changes or under transformations that create new ties.
Scope #first-order-cma-connection-and-identity
In the equal covariance-learning-rate case, the covariance update is C_new=A*exp(eta_A*Delta)*A^T. Its first-order expansion has the rank-weighted additive form (1-eta_A*U)*C+eta_A*sum_i u_i*(x_i-mu)*(x_i-mu)^T, where U=sum_i u_i. This explains the source's connection to a rank-mu covariance update under corresponding weights and rates. The exponential update is not that first-order approximation at a general finite step. The named algorithm does not include full CMA-ES evolution-path and cumulative step-size mechanisms, and it is a concrete Gaussian NES variant rather than an alias of the general NES framework.

related_match The mandatory scalar exponential global-scale update is a defining component related to the pinned exp/e^x function. The optimizer is neither equivalent to nor a subclass of that function. This relation does not interpret the matrix exponential as elementwise scalar exponentiation and does not introduce neural activation or layer semantics.
