Lifted structured embedding loss

Mathematical Methods AIMech:LiftedStructuredEmbeddingLoss DRAFT
Aliases: Lifted structured loss
A metric-learning objective that penalizes a positive pair’s Euclidean distance against negative distances incident to either endpoint, using a squared hinge and a hard maximum or its log-sum-exp relaxation.
Identity Notes & Concept Scope This record covers Song et al.’s lifted structured embedding loss, including the original maximum construction and the practically optimized log-sum-exp upper-bound form. These two forms are distinguished, not asserted numerically identical. The objective is separate from the full network, image preprocessing, hard-negative batch construction and optimizer. It is not N-pair-mc’s one-anchor dot-product categorical loss or N-pair-ovo’s sum of binary softplus comparisons. No normalized identity match was found across all 442 pinned AIO labels/scoped synonyms and 223 preceding native IDs/names/aliases. Word-delimited fixed-string searches of both full checkouts, including ignored and hidden files, returned 2 worktree lines in discovery context and 6 main-checkout lines including four unrelated ignored dependency matches. Six neighboring native records and nine exact AIO nodes with scoped synonyms and outgoing edges were inspected.

Mechanism #method
For labeled embeddings let D_ij=||z_i−z_j||_2. The original Equation (3) uses full-training-set positive pairs Phat and negative pairs Nhat. For positive (i,j), define J_ij=D_ij+max({alpha−D_ik:(i,k) in Nhat} union {alpha−D_jl:(j,l) in Nhat}), then average max(0,J_ij)^2 with divisor 2|Phat|. The practical Equation (4) instead uses a supplied minibatch: let P be its unordered same-class pairs and use Jtilde_ij=D_ij+log[sum_(k:y_k!=y_i)exp(alpha−D_ik)+sum_(l:y_l!=y_j)exp(alpha−D_jl)], summing only batch examples. Its loss is (1/(2|P|))sum_(i,j in P)max(0,Jtilde_ij)^2. Both endpoint-specific terms enter even when the same negative example belongs to both pools. Log-sum-exp bounds a hard maximum over the same terms; changing to a mined minibatch does not make its value a certified bound on the full-data objective. A dense pairwise distance matrix supports the batch computation. Loss distances are Euclidean norms, not squared distances; the squared matrix is only an intermediate.

related_match The loss trains neural representations so positive examples are closer than negatives. AIO MetricLearning is a deep-network representation-learning concept; this objective-to-training-approach relation is related only, not equivalence or subclass membership.
