Matching pursuit

Algorithms AIMech:MatchingPursuit DRAFT
A greedy fixed-dictionary approximation algorithm that repeatedly selects a unit-norm atom by its absolute correlation with the current residual and subtracts the residual projection onto that atom.
Identity Notes & Concept Scope The record covers the finite real-dictionary algorithm and identifies the paper’s fixed-fraction weak-selection generalization. MP is used only as a contextual source abbreviation and is not an identity alias. It differs from orthogonal matching pursuit, which refits the whole selected span at every step. All 442 AIO IDs, labels and scoped synonyms and 525 preceding native IDs, names and aliases were compared. The only normalized hit was MP, an exact MarkovChain synonym; the full MarkovChain record and node distinguish that stochastic model from pursuit. Ignored/hidden-inclusive searches of both checkouts found the prior pursuit source lead, Markov-chain context, author initials and unrelated environment tokens or RDF prefixes, not an existing pursuit record. The semantic comparison read 107 AIO name/synonym/definition rows and 148 native name/definition rows; nine full AIO CLASS nodes and incident edges and twelve contextual YAMLs were inspected. Basis pursuit specifies exact minimum-L1 reconstruction, least-angle regression follows an equiangular path, and NMF fits nonnegative factors. This is a bounded identity assessment of the inspected corpus.

Claims & Grounded Evidence

5 Claims
Mechanism #single-atom-update
For supplied unit real atoms g_j and r_0=y, exact matching chooses an index maximizing abs(g_j^T*r_k), sets c_k=g_j^T*r_k and r_(k+1)=r_k-c_k*g_j, and adds c_k*g_j to the approximation. Ties require a choice rule. The source also permits a fixed weak fraction 0<alpha<=1 with selected correlation at least alpha times the supremum; alpha=1 is attainable for a finite dictionary. The dictionary remains fixed, and selected atoms can recur.
Mechanism #residual-and-energy
Each residual is orthogonal to the atom just selected, and ||r_k||^2=abs(c_k)^2+||r_(k+1)||^2. Summing gives ||y||^2=sum_k abs(c_k)^2+||r_m||^2 for the performed steps. This sum uses per-step coefficients; combining repeated occurrences of an atom does not preserve that coefficient-energy formula. Earlier selected atoms need not remain orthogonal to the residual.
Limitation #projection-convergence-boundary
The ideal weak-selection sequence with a fixed positive fraction converges to the signal component orthogonal to the closed dictionary span. Thus zero residual requires the signal to belong to that span. The complete finite-dimensional case has a dictionary-dependent geometric residual bound. Neither statement guarantees finite termination, minimum support, a unique decomposition, a practical uniform rate, or the same behavior after early stopping and finite-precision errors.
Scope #orthogonal-refit-distinction
An exact curator example uses D=[e1,b], b=(3/5,4/5), y=e2. MP chooses b then e1, with step coefficients 4/5 and -12/25, leaving residual (0,9/25), whose correlation with b is 36/125. It selects b again next. OMP instead refits those two atoms to coefficients 5/4 on b and -3/4 on e1, giving zero residual. The original MP paper’s optional final backprojection onto the selected span is a separate correction; it does not refit before each subsequent selection as OMP does.
Scope #structured-implementation-scope
The paper’s Gabor implementation uses a structured coarse dictionary, local refinement and recursive correlation updates. Its O(N log N) per-iteration analysis uses those dictionary and numerical approximation assumptions, not an arbitrary dense dictionary. The time-frequency representation and denoising examples are applications of the algorithm; the supplied atoms are not learned by the basic pursuit recursion.

AIO Target Class Mapping Relation Mapping Rationale
AIO:SparseLearning
Sparse Learning
related_match The pinned target is a representation-learning network that finds sparse linear representations and identifies their elements, with exact sparse-coding and dictionary-learning synonyms. Pursuit constructs a representation using a supplied fixed dictionary, so the sparse-representation connection is direct. It does not learn dictionary elements or require a neural network; related_match preserves those scope differences without a subclass or equivalence assertion. RepresentationLearning and SparseAutoEncoder are different neural scopes. LassoRegression, LinearRegression and LeastsquaresAnalysis do not specify this atom-selection procedure. FeatureExtraction can be an application, and MathematicalFunction is too generic to identify it. MarkovChain is unrelated despite its MP synonym.
