Neal backtracking-suppressed MCMC
Algorithms AIMech:NealBacktrackingSuppressedMCMC DRAFT
A finite-state MCMC construction that augments a reversible chain with its preceding state and replaces a conditional resampling step with a balanced conditional kernel that suppresses immediate backtracking while preserving the target marginal.
Identity Notes & Concept Scope
Compared both candidate identities with all 442 pinned AIO and 701 native IDs, names, aliases and generated synonyms of every scope using the repository Unicode-aware normalizer; no normalized collisions. All 1143 current record hashes were refreshed and verified unchanged from the assessed inventory immediately before this write. Full ignored- and hidden-inclusive searches of three checkouts were completed without access errors; the 52-group frontier follow-up and 6 fixed-string groups were read in full. The semantic assessment read all 359 selected definitions/identity fields (86 AIO, 273 native), 12 complete pinned AIO CLASS contexts and 15 full native neighbors. Root separately assessed the handoffs, retained byte-verified AIO contexts and documented primary pages. Signed threshold memory and previous/current state-pair memory define separate algorithms; neither is a general Markov-process model, hidden/observed pairwise model, Gibbs sampler or persistent contrastive-divergence training method. The mapping is related_match to AIO:MarkovChain, without equivalence or inherited network/hidden-layer assertions. Absence is bounded to this snapshot, maintained corpus and the documented searches.

Mechanism
#pair-state-construction
Start with an irreducible reversible stochastic matrix T on a finite state space and its stationary distribution pi. Use ordered pairs (a,b) with T(a,b)>0, and pair mass mu(a,b)=pi(a)*T(a,b)=pi(b)*T(b,a). From (a,b), swap the components and update the second component using a stochastic conditional kernel U_b(a,c), giving the next pair (b,c). On the positive conditional support, require T(b,a)*U_b(a,c)=T(b,c)*U_b(c,a) and U_b(a,c)>=T(b,c) for c distinct from a. The resulting pair transition preserves mu, whose two coordinate marginals are pi. These are local conditional balance and off-diagonal conditions; they do not assert ordinary detailed balance of the composed pair transition.
Mechanism
#liu-conditional-kernel
One choice sets U_b(a,c)=min[T(b,c)/(1−T(b,a)), T(b,c)/(1−T(b,c))] for distinct a and c in the positive conditional support; the diagonal entry completes the row to one. Equivalently, propose c from T(b,.) conditioned on c being different from a and accept with min[1,(1−T(b,a))/(1−T(b,c))], retaining a on rejection. If T(b,a)=1, there is no alternative conditional state: set U_b(a,a)=1 without evaluating the undefined exclusion proposal or any 0/0 ratio. This guarded conditional step is based on the equation-defined kernel, not on the source’s inconsistent fast simulation branch.
Limitation
#corrected-asymptotic-variance-scope
Base-chain irreducibility does not imply irreducibility of the expanded pair chain. Diaconis and Miclo explicitly correct that assertion in the original Theorem 2. Assuming expanded-chain irreducibility separately, together with the finite reversible base and the conditional balance and domination conditions, the asymptotic variance of an average of f of one original-state coordinate is no greater than for the base chain. The comparison concerns the limiting quantity n*Var(mean_n), per transition. It does not establish the same ordering for arbitrary functions of both pair coordinates, finite-run mean squared error, mixing time or wall-clock cost.
Scope
#exact-pair-and-variance-checks
A curator three-state example uses probability 1/2 for each move to another state and no self transitions. The reversible base is irreducible and aperiodic, but the Liu pair kernel has two disjoint deterministic orientation cycles. Its invariant pair mass and, in each cycle of this example, the projected uniform target remain correct. Thus it refutes automatic pair irreducibility, not projected correctness in this example. A two-state alternating example checks the point-mass guard. In 54 further positive-conductance examples, both chains are irreducible and exact Poisson-equation calculations give 162 single-coordinate indicator comparisons, all with lower asymptotic variance for the expanded chain. For the independent uniform three-state baseline, with every row equal to (1/3,1/3,1/3), each indicator variance changes from 2/9 to 2/27. These constructed checks illustrate the corrected scope; they do not prove the general theorem or establish a runtime benefit.
Limitation
#printed-simulator-inconsistency
The inspected report’s fast simulation branch for T(b,a)>=1/2 states an acceptance probability 1/(1−T(b,c)), which can exceed one. For conditional masses (3/5,3/10,1/10), current index 0 and proposed index 1, that printed quantity is 10/7. Clipping it at one in the printed unconditioned-proposal branch gives transition probability 3/10, whereas Equation 16 gives 3/7. The maintained method uses Equation 16 and its conditional exclusion proposal; it does not claim an invented repair or verified implementation of the printed fast branch. Suppression need not eliminate returns: the same example has diagonal conditional probability 29/63.
Scope
#return-and-computation-boundaries
The construction suppresses a return to the immediately preceding state when the conditional distribution permits it; it does not prohibit all backtracking or revisits to older states. Computing base transition masses may be costly: a Metropolis self-transition probability can require summing rejection probabilities over proposals, and exclusion sampling can be expensive when the excluded conditional mass is near one. The literal construction has no automatic benefit for continuous transition distributions where exact immediate returns already have probability zero. Extensions that avoid a neighborhood or multiple preceding states require separate evidence.
⚠️ Curated Limitations & Negative Results
- This local label denotes Neal’s finite-state conditional-kernel construction. Generic nonreversible MCMC, lifted MCMC and non-backtracking graph walks are not asserted as exact aliases.
- The expanded-chain irreducibility requirement must be checked separately. The uncorrected automatic-irreducibility claim is not adopted.
- The target invariance statement and the asymptotic-variance comparison have different assumptions. Neither implies finite-run or computational superiority.
- The inspected 2004 arXiv report is retained with its printed simulation caveat. No corrected fast implementation or equivalence to uninspected author-hosted PDF bytes is claimed.
- The Diaconis–Miclo article was inspected selectively, including its correction on PDF p. 32; this is not a full review of its spectral results.
- The exact curator calculations do not execute author software or reproduce benchmarks. DRAFT remains.
