Peng and Williams Q(lambda)

Algorithms AIMech:PengWilliamsQLambda DRAFT
The 1996 tabular incremental Q(lambda) algorithm that combines a direct one-step Q-learning update for the current state-action pair with a second greedy-state prediction error propagated through decayed accumulating activity traces, without automatically cutting traces on exploratory actions.
Identity Notes & Concept Scope The actual 2026-10-15 post-cohort349 collection at commit f4b274e9c75703c0f3051ab630b4f090272f056a covers 780 maintained and 442 generated records. Four fixed-string, word-boundary searches included ignored and hidden files across the original checkout and three retained discovery/recovery checkouts. All 16608 occurrences were reconstructed into 1095 distinct contents, freshly read by two attributed supporting readers; root read 18 candidate-focused contents, all nine normalized definitions/21 fields and all 13 matching frontier objects. Normalization covered 4858 identity-field occurrences. The three expected normalized matches identify this exact existing record and its reviewed preimage; no duplicate is created. The authenticated 1994 conference author manuscript and inspected 1996 journal paper share the two-error tabular trace-control construction, with the specifically stated printed/action-selection/version qualifications. The stable 1996 operational definition, all six claim statements, original source row, ReinforcementLearning mapping and created_at remain unchanged. Q-learning, neural MCQ-L, Sarsa and Watkins hard-cut methods retain distinct identities. Reuse owner266 and retain its earlier ID and cohort342 resolution without duplication. Historical statements that the 1994 source was uninspected remain dated provenance.

Claims & Grounded Evidence

6 Claims
Mechanism #tabular-values-traces-and-behavior
The inspected baseline maintains a table Q(x,a) and an accumulating activity trace Tr(x,a), both initialized to zero in Figure 1. At each step it chooses an action using the current exploration policy, executes that action and observes the immediate reward and next state. Its state-value estimate is V(x)=max_a Q(x,a).
Mechanism #two-preupdate-errors
Using the same pre-update Q and V values for a transition (x,a,r,y), compute e_prime = r + gamma*V(y) - Q(x,a) and e = r + gamma*V(y) - V(x). The current-pair error e_prime and older-credit error e generally differ when the current action is not greedy; algebraically e_prime-e = V(x)-Q(x,a).
Mechanism #decay-old-credit-before-direct-update
First multiply every existing trace by gamma*lambda and add alpha*Tr(x,a)*e, using the decayed trace, to its Q entry. Next add alpha*e_prime separately to the current state-action pair. Only after both value updates increment the current pair’s trace by one. A revisited current pair can therefore receive both its older-trace contribution and the direct current-pair update.
Mechanism #retained-traces-through-exploration
The displayed core does not automatically zero traces after a nongreedy action. Older credit is driven by reward plus the discounted next-state maximum minus the current-state maximum, while rewards still come from the trajectory actually followed. This differs from selected-next-action MCQ-L and from a scheme that cuts prior traces whenever exploration chooses a nongreedy action.
Scope #zero-product-one-step-boundary
Whenever gamma*lambda=0, including lambda=0 or the permitted gamma=0 boundary, every old-trace contribution in Figure 1 vanishes. Only the direct one-step Q-learning update remains for the current pair; at gamma=0 this is alpha*(r-Q(x,a)). Equality of this update does not by itself supply a convergence theorem without the relevant sampling and learning-rate assumptions.
Scope #trace-work-and-pruning-scope
Incremental value propagation avoids requiring a complete trajectory replay before each update, but the set of active state-action traces can grow to the entire table. The article discusses retaining only sufficiently significant traces when gamma*lambda<1. Such pruning is an approximation requiring its own threshold and conventions, not a proof that the exact update has constant per-step cost.
