PoClustering edge-clique-cover heuristic
Algorithms AIMech:PoClusteringEdgeCliqueCover DRAFT
An approximate PoClustering algorithm that incrementally extends and prunes clique sets to cover the edges of dissimilarity-threshold graphs, retaining a potentially smaller overlapping cluster family than exhaustive maximal-clique enumeration.
Identity Notes & Concept Scope
At the start of this three-candidate batch, compared all 442 pinned AIO and 662 native IDs, names, aliases and scoped synonyms against OHC, exact PoClustering and the PoClustering edge-clique-cover heuristic; no normalized identity match. Ignored- and hidden-inclusive fixed-string searches of the recovery, older discovery and original Documents checkouts returned 17, 0, 64 lines for the combined candidate terms. All lines were read. Recovery matches are pending discovery/source-reading notes; the older checkout has no matches; original-checkout hits are ECC certificate-authority names and eccenca namespaces in ignored dependency files, not clustering records. Semantic search including clustering, clique, poset, pyramid, fuzzy and DAG terms covered 41 AIO and 225 native definitions. The 41 AIO and 224 previously read native definitions were unchanged; the new Llama definition and full record were read. Eleven complete annotated AIO node/edge/generated contexts and five full native records were assessed. Retain the 2007 greedy clique-extension and redundancy-pruning heuristic, distinct from exhaustive PoClustering, exact minimum edge-clique-cover optimization, OHC density tolerances and Llama nearest-neighbor unions. ECC is not used as an ambiguous native alias.
Claims & Grounded Evidence
6 Claims
Mechanism
#incremental-edge-cover
Process dissimilarity-ordered edge insertions while maintaining a family of maximal cliques that covers the current graph edges. The described heuristic extends newly affected sets into maximal cliques and sequentially removes cliques whose edges are already covered. The retained sets support an overlapping cluster-inclusion structure.
Scope
#heuristic-not-minimum-solver
The stated goal is a small edge-clique cover, but the described maximal extension and sequential redundancy removal are greedy. They are not an exact minimum-cardinality cover solver and do not enumerate every maximal clique. Distinct choices can affect which cluster sets are retained.
Scope
#coverage-versus-family-recovery
Covering every threshold-graph edge with retained clique sets can preserve each pair’s dissimilarity when the corresponding cluster diameters and threshold witnesses are retained. This is distinct from recovering the complete exact PoCluster family. A constructed six-vertex graph has eight maximal triangles but a four-triangle cover of the same twelve edges; the example is not a claimed output of the published greedy routine.
Limitation
#printed-pseudocode
The displayed routine forms intersections of old endpoint cliques without explicitly adding the new edge endpoints, and its argmin constraint names the original cover rather than the candidate subset. Read literally, those expressions do not specify the prose’s extension and coverage-preserving pruning. The record follows the described heuristic while declining conformance claims for the literal pseudocode or an uninspected implementation.
Scope
#complexity-conditions
The paper gives an edge-count-based polynomial accounting for its intended greedy updates, with at most O(n²) edge insertions and costs depending on the maintained cover size. This is an analysis of the stated restricted update procedure, not the complexity of an exact minimum-cover solver or a reproduced wall-clock guarantee.
Scope
#evaluation-scope
Reported experiments compare the heuristic with hierarchical and pyramidal clustering on generated overlapping set families. The match score averages each reference set’s best Jaccard match and is directional; it does not by itself measure precision of all output sets. Exact-method timings are omitted because of long runs, the heuristic is slower than the plotted baselines, and real-data experiments are deferred to an uninspected technical report.
⚠️ Curated Limitations & Negative Results
- This is the Liu et al. PoClustering ECC heuristic, not arbitrary edge-clique-cover optimization, exact PoClustering, or error-correcting coding.
- The record does not certify a minimum cover, an approximation ratio, order independence or literal pseudocode correctness. Coverage preservation requires the stated threshold/diameter information.
- The conference paper’s broader bijection proof and real-data experiments are deferred to an unread technical report; no universal lossless-family or biological performance claim is adopted.
- The synthetic generator leaves some details, including the treatment of normally distributed overlap probabilities outside [0,1], unspecified. No author code or experimental data were inspected or executed.
- All six pages of the primary 2007 paper were read, including figures, algorithm and references; the 2006 exact method was read as context. Finite constructed checks are not author implementation runs or benchmark replication. This record remains DRAFT.

Mapped AIO Classes
| AIO Target Class | Mapping Relation | Mapping Rationale |
|---|---|---|
AIO:HierarchicalClustering
Hierarchical Clustering
|
related_match | The retained cluster sets form a partial order extending tree-based clustering. The AIO target is a related grouping task rather than an identity with this greedy algorithm. |
AIO:UnsupervisedClustering
Unsupervised Clustering
|
related_match | The generic heuristic groups objects from pairwise dissimilarities without class-label supervision. Its directional reference-set metric is an evaluation choice. |
