Product of Student-t
Model Families AIMech:ProductOfStudentT DRAFT
Aliases: Product of Student-t Model, PoT
A normalized energy-based density on continuous observations formed from products of Student-t-shaped factors of linear filter responses, with a positive finite joint normalizer and optional grouping of filter energies.
Identity Notes & Concept Scope
This is a specified analysis-product model within the maintained Product of Experts family. Sparse filter responses need not be independent, and the model differs from a directed sparse synthesis dictionary with independent source coefficients. The square invertible case connects to noiseless Student-t ICA; an overcomplete analysis product is a different generalization. Grouped quadratic responses retain the stated family extension. The paper also proposes nonquadratic powers, which are broader generalized factors and are not all literally Student-t distributions. Iterated Wiener Filter is a separately represented inference algorithm, not another name for this density. Four candidate identities were compared against all 442 pinned AIO IDs, labels and scoped synonyms and 447 preceding native IDs, names and aliases. Sparse coding matches the exact synonym and definition of AIO:SparseLearning and is reused; none of the three selected additions has a normalized identity match. Ignored/hidden full-checkout searches returned 47 lines each in worktree and main, with identical matched-line sets after merge. All 47 matched lines were read; they contain the existing sparse-coding class, its source/export and prior discovery context. All 205 semantic label/synonym rows were read and verified unchanged. Twenty-four annotated AIO nodes and outgoing edges comprise 23 unchanged prior readings and one new symmetry-network inspection. Thirty-two contextual YAMLs comprise 31 unchanged prior readings and one fully read new record, including eight native neighbors. Absence and no-match assessments are bounded to this snapshot and inspected neighborhood.

Mechanism
#energy-and-domain
For filter columns J_i and positive exponents alpha_i, define p(x)=Z^(-1) product_i[1+(J_i^T x)^2/2]^(-alpha_i), requiring 0<Z<infinity. Its energy is sum_i alpha_i log[1+(J_i^T x)^2/2]. Experts are factors in a joint product, not the marginal distributions of independent filter outputs. In the square invertible case, a change of variables reduces normalization to scalar factors and a determinant. The source only states positive exponents; curator analysis adds the necessary domain qualification: rank deficiency leaves an unpenalized direction, and even full rank with positive exponents is insufficient. In one dimension with identical nonzero filters, the exponent sum must exceed one half. An independent spanning subset whose individual exponents exceed one half is a sufficient condition, since remaining factors are bounded by one.
Mechanism
#gamma-augmentation
Introduce positive u_i with joint density proportional to product_i u_i^(alpha_i-1) exp[-u_i(1+(J_i^T x)^2/2)]. Integrating each u_i yields the displayed factor up to an x-independent Gamma constant. Conditional u_i given x are independent Gamma variables with shape alpha_i and rate 1+(J_i^T x)^2/2. Conditional x given u is zero-mean Gaussian with precision J diag(u) J^T when positive definite. Integrating x instead couples u through the precision determinant; this is not simply a directed model with independent Gamma priors and Gaussian observations. Proper full conditionals do not by themselves prove that the joint normalizer is finite.
Mechanism
#learning-and-sampling
The paper fits filters and exponents with approximate contrastive divergence, drawing latent scales at observed data and then reconstructed observations. In a square invertible system, inverse-filter transformation of independent scaled Gaussian variables gives the required conditional covariance. In an overcomplete system, exact sampling can use a factorization of J diag(u) J^T. The paper reports a faster pseudoinverse replacement as an approximation; it is not generally the exact Gaussian conditional. A curator example J=[1,1], u=(1,4) has exact variance 1/5 while the pseudoinverse shortcut gives 5/16. No historical code behavior is asserted.
Scope
#grouped-features
Quadratic grouping replaces each squared response by sum_j W_ij (J_j^T x)^2 with nonnegative weights. This couples neighboring or learned groups of filter energies, while latent scales remain conditionally independent given x. Fixed local neighborhoods can induce topographic organization; learned groups need not follow a fixed spatial map. The paper separately considers powers beta other than two, whose conditional transform-coordinate distributions are generalized Laplace rather than Gaussian. Independent transform-coordinate sampling uses the square invertible case; a pseudoinverse does not make the overcomplete case exact.
⚠️ Curated Limitations & Negative Results
- Positive exponents, unit filter norms and a valid Gaussian conditional are insufficient universal normalization guarantees. Individual factors need not themselves be normalized densities. Probability-model claims are conditional on the stated joint being proper; the record does not certify all source-trained parameters.
- Analysis filters in an overcomplete product are not the independent latent coefficients of an overcomplete synthesis model. Conditional independence of scales given x does not imply independent scale marginals or independent observed features.
- The pseudoinverse reconstruction used in the reported highly overcomplete experiment generally changes the conditional covariance. CD and this additional approximation do not establish exact maximum likelihood or unbiased sampling.
- The visual experiments use whitened natural-image patches, selected dimensions, norm constraints and particular fixed or learned group structures. Displayed filter organization does not prove a biological causal mechanism or general predictive superiority.
- The denoising demonstration uses a complete filter set and a separate iterative MAP algorithm. Proposed overcomplete/grouped denoising gains remain prospective. No author code, empirical training or denoising benchmark was executed.
