Professor forcing

Algorithms AIMech:ProfessorForcing DRAFT
An adversarial recurrent-network training procedure that retains teacher-forced likelihood learning while training an auxiliary discriminator and the generator to reduce differences between teacher-forced and free-running behavior sequences.
Identity Notes & Concept Scope Compared all 442 pinned AIO and 586 native IDs, names, aliases and scoped synonyms; no normalized identity match. Ignored- and hidden-inclusive fixed-string searches of the recovery, older discovery and original Documents checkouts returned 2, 0, 0 lines. All distinct match contents were inspected. Semantic matching covered 88 AIO and 202 native definitions, with unchanged preceding rows verified and new matches read. 4 full annotated AIO node/edge/generated contexts and 3 full native records were inspected. No normalized identity match was found. Initially the ignored-inclusive full-text search had no matches; the refreshed search includes the new pending lead in the preceding discovery report. The source-defined algorithm adds adversarial alignment of teacher-forced and free-running behavior while retaining teacher-forced likelihood. It is not ordinary reference feedback, mixed-prefix scheduled sampling or parameter-averaged Mean Teacher. AdaMixUp uses a discriminator to separate mixtures from original examples with a different cooperative objective, not to confuse execution-mode labels. The AIO GAN framework is mechanistically related, but the algorithm distinguishes generator behavior in two modes rather than simply discriminating raw data and generated outputs; related_match avoids false exact or broad identity.

Claims & Grounded Evidence

Mechanism #two-mode-behavior-alignment
Run the same parameterized recurrent generator with observed previous outputs and with its own generated outputs. A behavior function B selects a sequence of hidden activations and optionally output information from each mode. Train a discriminator to identify which mode produced that behavior, and train the generator to confuse it while continuing to fit the observed sequence likelihood. The modes share generator parameters; this is neither a second independently learned teacher model nor a requirement to replace the likelihood targets with model-generated targets.
Mechanism #discriminator-and-generator-objectives
Let D(B) estimate the probability that behavior came from teacher forcing, with balanced mode examples. The discriminator minimizes the sum of teacher-side negative log D and free-side negative log(1-D). The generator minimizes teacher-forced NLL plus free-running confusion C_f=-E_free log D(B), optionally also adding teacher-side confusion C_t=-E_teacher log(1-D(B)). The source reports both NLL+C_f and NLL+C_f+C_t variants. Omitting C_t removes that teacher-side adversarial loss, but does not make teacher behavior permanently fixed: later generator updates change both modes through shared parameters.
Limitation #discriminator-matching-boundary
For frozen finite behavior distributions p and q and an unrestricted balanced classifier, the discriminator cross-entropy optimum is D*(b)=p(b)/(p(b)+q(b)) where the denominator is positive. This idealized result concerns the selected behavior representation and an optimized classifier. A limited discriminator failing to distinguish modes does not establish equality of full output-sequence distributions, faithful long-horizon generation or global likelihood optimality. A constant behavior map can make distinct output laws indistinguishable. The practical nonsaturating generator losses and moving teacher behavior are not simply a guarantee of minimizing one fixed-data divergence.
Limitation #discrete-sampling-gradient-scope
The discriminator can send gradients through differentiable hidden-state behavior without differentiating a realized discrete token choice. That supplies a continuous path for training with discrete outputs, but a fixed-realization path derivative alone need not equal the full derivative of an expectation whose sampling law depends on generator parameters. A constructed Bernoulli example separates those path and sampling-distribution terms. The inspected paper does not establish an unbiased full-expectation gradient theorem; no assertion about an uninspected implementation or a particular omitted estimator is made here.
Scope #reported-training-configuration
The main experimental setup uses a GRU generator and a bidirectional recurrent discriminator over behavior, with an MLP classifier; the behavior includes pre-tanh generator activations and can include prediction outputs. It enables adversarial generator backpropagation only when discriminator accuracy exceeds75percent, and stops discriminator updates above99percent. These are reported heuristics rather than universal stability thresholds. Sequential MNIST instead uses a convolutional discriminator, and the handwriting experiment compares nonoverlapping50-step behavior segments from longer generated sequences.
Scope #reported-evaluation-boundaries
The reported character-level Penn Treebank setup improves validation bits per character from1.50 to1.48, while reporting no observed word-level improvement and about three times the training time despite faster progress per update. Sequential MNIST test NLL79.58 does not beat the listed PixelRNN79.2. The paper also reports blinded volunteer preferences for selected handwriting and vocal-synthesis samples, using48 handwriting evaluators and29 vocal evaluators with repeated ratings. Those task-specific protocols and T-SNE illustrations do not certify universal quality gains, independent-trial significance, equality of behavior distributions or reliable generation at arbitrary lengths.

related_match The method uses adversarial discriminator/generator training and explicitly relates its behavior-matching objective to GANs. It is a training algorithm for recurrent models, with mode-conditioned behavior rather than only real-versus-generated outputs; the pinned network framework is therefore related rather than an exact identity or asserted is-a parent.
