Restricted Boltzmann Machine Collaborative Filtering

Model Families AIMech:RestrictedBoltzmannMachineCollaborativeFiltering DRAFT
Aliases: RBM collaborative filtering, RBM-CF
A family of shared-parameter restricted Boltzmann models for categorical user-item ratings, with a user-specific visible set and optional conditioning on the item-observation mask and low-rank factorization of rating interactions.
Identity Notes & Concept Scope This record denotes the specific mask-indexed rating construction and its conditional/factored variants in Salakhutdinov, Mnih and Hinton 2007. It is narrower than a generic RBM application or the maintained input-conditioned RBM architecture. Corresponding item/rating parameters are shared across users, but each observed-item set defines its own joint law. It is not a single trained Netflix model, a matrix-factorization predictor, the generic CRBM, or a standalone ensemble-performance record. Gaussian hidden units with unit variance are a source variant; the defining displayed mechanism below uses binary hidden units. Four candidate identities were compared against all 442 pinned AIO IDs, labels and scoped synonyms and 447 preceding native IDs, names and aliases. Sparse coding matches the exact synonym and definition of AIO:SparseLearning and is reused; none of the three selected additions has a normalized identity match. Ignored/hidden full-checkout searches returned 47 lines each in worktree and main, with identical matched-line sets after merge. All 47 matched lines were read; they contain the existing sparse-coding class, its source/export and prior discovery context. All 205 semantic label/synonym rows were read and verified unchanged. Twenty-four annotated AIO nodes and outgoing edges comprise 23 unchanged prior readings and one new symmetry-network inspection. Thirty-two contextual YAMLs comprise 31 unchanged prior readings and one fully read new record, including eight native neighbors. Absence and no-match assessments are bounded to this snapshot and inspected neighborhood.

Claims & Grounded Evidence

Mechanism #rating-joint
For a user with included item set S, let v_ik be one-hot over K possible ratings and h_j be binary. Define E_S(v,h)=-sum_(i in S,k,j) v_ik W_ikj h_j-sum_(i in S,k) b_ik v_ik-sum_j c_j h_j, and normalize exp(-E_S) over those rating groups and hidden states. Finite support gives a finite partition for finite parameters. Rating groups given h have softmax probabilities and hidden units given v have independent sigmoid probabilities. Parameters W,b,c are shared across users; missing-item terms are omitted. Omitting an item is generally different from integrating it out of a larger fixed-item model, because that integration introduces a hidden-dependent factor. The discovery calculation verifies this distinction on a finite example. Rating-category coding does not itself encode an ordinal likelihood.
Mechanism #query-inference
For one added query item q, let a_j=c_j+sum_(i in S,k) v_ik W_ikj. Its exact unnormalized rating score under the augmented visible-set model is exp(b_qk) product_j[1+exp(a_j+W_qkj)]. Normalize the K scores, then choose a mode or expected numeric rating according to the decision loss. This sums binary hidden states analytically. Multiple query items generally become dependent, and the paper enumerates K^n assignments for a joint n-item query. The experimental predictor instead computes hidden means sigmoid(a_j) from observed ratings and plugs them into a query softmax. That faster approximation generally differs from the exact scores; finite calculations exhibit a probability gap.
Mechanism #conditioning-and-factorization
The conditional variant holds fixed a binary item-observation vector r and replaces c by c+D^T r. It represents p(v,h|r), not p(r). The source uses known test user-item pairs with withheld rating values as mask information. The factored variant writes W_ikj=sum_c A_ikc B_cj, restricting the flattened rating-interaction matrix to rank at most C and reducing parameter count. It does not impose that rank on the nonlinear predicted rating matrix; the conditioning matrix D remains separate. These variants preserve categorical rating support while changing conditional parameterization.
Scope #fitting-and-evaluation
Training averages user-specific sufficient-statistic updates for shared parameters and uses data-started contrastive divergence that reconstructs included rating groups. Finite CD is an approximate learning rule, not an exact likelihood-gradient guarantee. The reported Netflix comparisons distinguish ordinary, Gaussian-hidden, conditional and factored models, use different latent dimensions, and compare validation RMSE. The combined RBM/SVD result is a validation-tuned ensemble result; it does not establish a universal advantage for this model family.
