Ritter–Gallegos two-stage outlier-mixture fitting
Algorithms AIMech:RitterGallegosTwoStageOutlierMixtureFitting DRAFT
Aliases: POP–BAS–OUT mixture fitting
A two-stage mixture-parameter fitting procedure that estimates a regular component from a threshold-selected basic subset of a contaminated population, then identifies and fits an outlier component using the original population scored against that regular-component approximation.
Identity Notes & Concept Scope
Current identity assessment at base 7d38dafe42243c93664bc246a5ff77beca593cd3 compared the IDs, names, aliases and scoped synonyms of all 1234 records (4896 field occurrences; 3739 unique normalized values), 19 AIO contexts and 17 native neighbors against the accepted unchanged historical records, plus the current ignored/hidden-inclusive four-root search and full frontier labels with matched/plausible owner bodies. This record is the threshold-driven POP/BAS/OUT component-law fitting procedure, separate from the IECO classifier that consumes distributions and class-slot constraints. EM/CEM and fixed-weight EM optimize other objectives; SVDD, LOF and nearest-neighbor data descriptions estimate support or scores, and Cutout is image augmentation. No exact pinned AIO identity was established in the inspected scope; the selected AIO:MachineLearningTask related_match connects an algorithm to a task, not an equivalence or subclass claim. Proposed main:913 is shared source responsibility for two separate records, retaining all 22 bibliography occurrences and explicit residual questions. AutoClass retains main:610. Frozen issue402 and issues404/406 plus the prior twelve search questions remain unchanged; no source exhaustion is claimed.

Mechanism
#population-to-basic-fit
Given contaminated observations POP, a family M and a scalar outlier indicator chi(mu,x), first estimate mu_POP in M. Define BAS by chi(mu_POP,x)<=cut_BAS for x in POP, using a cutoff specified in advance. Fit mu_BAS in the same family M and use it as an approximation to the regular-component law. In an elliptical family the source proposes Mahalanobis distance as an indicator; the general procedure is not restricted to that choice.
Mechanism
#original-population-outlier-fit
Score the original POP against mu_BAS and set OUT={x in POP:chi(mu_BAS,x)>cut_OUT}, with a separately specified cutoff. Estimate mu_OUT from OUT. BAS and OUT can overlap because their membership tests use different fitted distributions. The procedure estimates both component laws rather than discarding every outlier from the statistical model.
Scope
#two-stage-and-prior-boundary
The selected procedure makes the two stated fitting stages; iteration is mentioned but is not part of this identity. Cutoffs require calibration, and the indicator and component families must permit reliable estimation from the retained observations. The contamination mixing prior is a separate part of the mixture specification; the BAS/OUT sample fractions are not asserted to estimate it.
Scope
#separate-classifier-and-covariance-components
The fitted laws can supply class-conditional mixture models for the later constrained classifier, but fitting does not itself perform class assignment. Section2.3 separately discusses covariance weighting attributed to Piper and colleagues; it is not a mandatory definition of the two-stage estimator or a transferred James–Stein risk guarantee.
⚠️ Curated Limitations & Negative Results
- This is a heuristic fitting rule. No likelihood-ascent, consistency, global-optimum, universally robust cutoff or contamination-rate guarantee is asserted.
- The basic subset must support the chosen regular-family fit, and OUT must contain enough suitable observations for its own fit. Empty subsets, singular covariance estimates and high-dimensional low-sample cases need explicit estimation policies.
- BAS and OUT overlap is permitted; their empirical frequencies cannot be used as complementary mixture weights without an additional rule.
- The 1997 text names cutREG on PDF p.6 without defining it locally. The earlier1996 abstract defines cutREG, but that does not authorize silently replacing cutBAS or repairing the1997 text. This proposal uses the explicitly defined cutBAS and cutOUT sequence.
- The 1996 conference abstract is retained as context only. Its later classification step differs from the1997 category-marginalized rule, and it does not provide independent full-method support.
- The defining evidence is the exact author-hosted1997 manuscript, not byte-verified publisher full text. No inferred journal-page offset, author-code execution, historical experiment or numerical performance advantage is claimed.
- Covariance weighting, premium protection, minimum-volume ellipsoid estimation, other robust estimators and alternative mixture fits retain separate source questions.

related_match | The procedure learns component-distribution parameters from observed data. The inspected AIO target is a task/process context and does not identify POP/BAS/OUT fitting; this is a related algorithm-to-task association, not equivalence or an upstream subclass assertion. Selecting subsets during parameter fitting does not make the complete procedure a raw-data preprocessing transform. |
