ShakeDrop regularization

Algorithms AIMech:ShakeDropRegularization DRAFT
A residual-network regularization procedure that uses a Bernoulli switch to alternate ordinary residual computation with separately specified forward and prescribed backward multipliers, and uses an expected forward coefficient for deterministic inference.
Identity Notes & Concept Scope Current creation-context inventory at merged base fc27ccaf4668f1bf7468a10c269f5583fa3e640b covered 742 maintained and 442 pinned AIO records, including IDs, names, aliases and scoped synonyms, with no normalized candidate-probe collision. Four fixed-string word searches included ignored and hidden files and yielded 369/373/1045/1105 occurrences. Root read all eleven distinct matching strings and their selected provenance, while exact reconstruction accounted mechanically for all 2892 occurrences. Hits identify existing frontier leads and historical Fast AutoAugment code inventory paths, not a maintained record for this identity. The newly surfaced shakedrop.py path was listed at repository commit 2424224291616a2158a2265069ee95a78a2d13d9; no implementation was opened or executed. Prior primary-source, selected-neighbor and exact pinned CLASS/incident-edge inspections remain bounded by their individual research acceptances. This is not a global absence or saturation claim. This record denotes the named residual regularization procedure with a shared Bernoulli gate and distinct forward/backward multipliers. It is distinct from complementary two-learned-branch Shake-Shake and from the original stochastic-depth procedure despite degenerate parameter boundaries. Original 2018 and later 2019 sharing defaults and reversed Type A/B labels remain explicit. The related ResidualNeuralNetwork mapping describes a host association only. The corrected conditional zero-mean limitation changes no identity or mapping.

Claims & Grounded Evidence

Scope #gated-residual-perturbation
ShakeDrop is a stochastic regularization procedure for residual networks. Within an identity-skip block, a Bernoulli gate selects either the ordinary residual computation or a perturbed residual contribution. The construction can operate on one learned residual branch plus its skip path; it does not require the two learned residual branches used by the compared Shake-Shake construction. It is a training and inference procedure, not a complete network architecture or a stand-alone parameter optimizer.
Mechanism #distinct-forward-backward-coefficients
For a residual block x+F(x), use forward residual multiplier c_f=b_l+(1-b_l)*alpha and prescribed backward residual multiplier c_b=b_l+(1-b_l)*beta. The same Bernoulli gate b_l is used in both passes. When b_l=1, both multipliers equal one; when b_l=0, they are alpha and beta respectively. The source uses mutually independent alpha and beta, including a configured constant-zero alpha case. The backward expression prescribes derivative scaling through the residual path; it is not another forward evaluation or a claim that beta is the derivative of the realized forward multiplier.
Mechanism #depth-dependent-switching
Set P(b_l=1)=p_l using the displayed depth schedule p_l=1-(l/L)*(1-p_L), where l indexes the residual blocks from the input, L is their total number, and p_L is the configured probability at the last block. For 0<=p_L<1, later blocks have a greater probability of entering the perturbed case. This is a schedule across network depth, not an annealing schedule over training iterations. The paper varies p_L with architecture and experimental setting rather than fixing one universal probability.
Mechanism #sampling-and-host-settings
The 2019 author copy compares batch, image, channel and element-level sharing of alpha and beta and uses element-level coefficients in its principal experiments. It uses alpha=0 with beta uniform on [0,1] for the tested original architectures, and alpha uniform on [-1,1] with beta uniform on [0,1] for the tested modified residual branches ending with batch normalization. These are experimentally selected configurations. The original 2018 preprint instead selects image-level sharing for memory efficiency while reporting a lower pixel-level error in its preliminary comparison; that earlier default is retained as version context.
Mechanism #deterministic-test-rule
At inference, replace the random forward multiplier by E[b_l+(1-b_l)*alpha]. For p_l<1 this expectation is p_l+(1-p_l)*E[alpha | b_l=0]; independent gate and coefficient draws with zero-mean alpha reduce it to p_l. This includes the stated constant-zero alpha and symmetric uniform alpha configurations. When p_l=1, the coefficient is one directly. This defines a deterministic local inference rule, not the exact expected output of the complete nonlinear network.
Scope #distinction-and-special-cases
Setting alpha=beta=0 reduces the displayed residual forward and backward operation to the Bernoulli RandomDrop or stochastic-depth operation, with its expected gate coefficient at inference. Setting alpha=beta=1 removes this perturbation. Those parameter boundaries do not identify the full methods as aliases. In particular, b_l=0 with alpha=0 and beta>0 removes the residual value in the forward pass while still permitting a nonzero prescribed residual derivative, unlike dropping that path in both passes.

related_match ShakeDrop modifies training and inference on a residual host with a skip connection. The pinned AIO concept denotes a broader network architecture category, not this stochastic regularization procedure. The association does not assert equivalence, subclass membership or that every source configuration inherits all architectural components listed for the pinned target.
