Smart Augmentation

Algorithms AIMech:SmartAugmentation DRAFT
A learned augmentation procedure that trains a network to synthesize examples from same-class inputs while receiving both a within-class reference loss and feedback through the target classifier’s training loss.
Identity Notes & Concept Scope Smart Augmentation denotes Lemley et al.’s learned same-class synthesis procedure, not all automatically chosen augmentation policies. It differs from fixed averaging in SamplePairing, convex input/target interpolation in MixUp, adaptive coefficient regions in AdaMixUp, and adversarial or latent-data generative formulations. The two networks cooperate through training losses; a generator does not by itself imply a GAN minimax game. No normalized identity match was found across all 442 pinned AIO labels/scoped synonyms and 253 preceding native IDs/names/aliases. Full-checkout fixed-string searches included ignored and hidden files in both worktree and main checkout, returning 27 lines in each checkout. These were neighboring-record and review references or prior candidate leads, not existing records for these identities. Twelve exact AIO CLASS nodes with synonyms and outgoing edges and six neighboring native mechanisms were inspected. Absence is bounded to this snapshot and semantic neighborhood.

Mechanism #method
During training, an augmentation network A takes same-class examples and produces a synthetic example of the original sample type and spatial shape. A reference example from that class supplies an augmentation loss L_A, while a target network B supplies its task loss L_B. Backpropagate through B into A using a combined objective f(L_A,L_B), which may be weighted or scheduled. A can be shared across classes or specialized into separate class-dependent networks. In the published grayscale realization, stack k same-class input images as channels, produce a one-channel image, and choose an additional same-class reference that is not one of those inputs. L_A is mean squared error to this reference; B processes the generated image and the reference as separate examples with categorical cross-entropy L_B. Figure 9 combines losses as alpha*L_A+beta*L_B. At test time discard A and use B on ordinary examples. Multi-example blending is the central construction, while the reported experiments also include a one-input setting; fixed channel counts, architectures and weights are protocol choices.

Artificial Intelligence Ontology (AIO) Grounding

Mapped AIO Classes
AIO Target Class Mapping Relation Mapping Rationale
AIO:DataAugmentation
Data Augmentation
related_match This procedure constructs training examples and specifies how a predictor is trained with them. The AIO target is augmentation in a preprocessing branch; this related association preserves the broader training and target-handling scope without asserting equivalence or a subclass relation.
AIO:SupervisedLearning
Supervised Learning
related_match The predictor learns from class labels associated with generated or combined training examples. This is an algorithm-to-task association, not identity with the general supervised-learning task.
