Spatial Transformer

Layers & Modules AIMech:SpatialTransformer DRAFT
Aliases: Spatial Transformer module
A learnable neural-network component that predicts an input-dependent spatial transformation and uses the resulting sampling grid to warp an image or feature tensor.
Identity Notes & Concept Scope This record denotes the 2015 spatial-transformer module, composed of localization, grid generation and sampling. A spatial transformer network contains one or more such components; it is not a single fixed classifier or checkpoint. This geometric sampler is distinct from the later token-attention Transformer architecture and from multiplying a feature map by a spatial gate. No normalized identity match was found across all 442 pinned AIO labels/scoped synonyms and 282 preceding native IDs/names/aliases. Full-checkout fixed-string searches included ignored and hidden files in worktree and main, returning 2 and 2 lines respectively. Every text hit was a prior candidate lead or a closely related variant lead. Ten exact AIO CLASS nodes with scoped synonyms/comments and outgoing edges and five native neighboring mechanisms were inspected. Absence is bounded to this snapshot and semantic neighborhood.

Mechanism #method
A localization network reads the input tensor and predicts parameters of a configured spatial transformation. A grid generator applies that transformation to regular output-grid coordinates to obtain source sampling coordinates in the input. The paper illustrates a six-parameter 2D affine transform, while allowing other differentiable parameterizations. A sampler interpolates the input at the generated coordinates, using the same spatial warp for every channel; output height and width are configured separately from input size. With bilinear sampling, weighted neighboring pixels determine each output value and piecewise derivatives pass the task loss through the sampling coordinates and transformation parameters to the localization network. The module can therefore be trained jointly using the surrounding task objective, without requiring separate transformation labels in the source setup. Transformation type, localization network, sampler and placement are choices.
Limitation #feature-alignment-limit
A spatial transformer that acts identically on all feature channels cannot generally align feature maps of a transformed image with those of the original. The later analysis identifies changes in channel responses and receptive-field geometry as obstacles even under ideal pose prediction. It distinguishes translation-covariant features and special invariant-feature cases, and does not deny that a network can benefit or achieve some invariant classification by other means. The broader rigorous proof referenced by that paper was not inspected.

broad_match The native concept is a defined representation-transforming component within a neural network, so the generic Layer class has broader scope.
