Stein Variational Policy Gradient
Algorithms AIMech:SteinVariationalPolicyGradient DRAFT
Aliases: SVPG
A policy optimization method that applies Stein variational gradient descent to an entropy-regularized distribution over policy parameters, updating multiple policies through kernel-weighted return and prior gradients together with kernel-gradient repulsion.
Identity Notes & Concept Scope
The current cohort361 prewrite comparison at base add2c806f6729c8599f4d5cfd6d75c7decde006c covered 1,243 maintained records (801 native and 442 pinned AIO), 4,927 identity-field occurrences and 3,766 normalized values. Candidate-normalized identity matches were empty. Four ignored- and hidden-inclusive fixed-string/word-boundary scans produced 6,732 occurrences across 1,557 distinct matching contents, assessed through three attributed reader scopes and exact inherited-wrapper reconstruction. SVPG denotes the source-scoped interacting-policy-particle optimizer, distinct from direct SVGD target approximation, amortized differentiable-sampler fitting, SoftQ action sampling, REINFORCE, GAE and TRPO. Its policy-objective gradient and kernel interaction do not imply an unrestricted KL guarantee, exact samples or mandatory neural architecture. Main909 retains 71 citation occurrences, 36 family groupings, five questions and three search-only leads, together with original cohort355/359 provenance. The AIO reinforcement-learning related_match expresses a task relationship rather than algorithm equivalence.
Claims & Grounded Evidence
6 Claims
Mechanism
#parameter-distribution-objective
SVPG optimizes a distribution q over policy parameters using expected return minus alpha times KL(q||q0), rather than directly adding entropy to each action distribution.
Mechanism
#normalized-tilted-target
For positive temperature and a finite normalizer, the entropy-regularized target has density proportional to q0(theta) exp(J(theta)/alpha).
Mechanism
#interacting-policy-update
Its empirical update combines kernel-weighted return and prior gradients with the gradient of the kernel across a population of policy-parameter particles.
Scope
#return-gradient-inputs
The method accepts policy-return gradient estimates, with finite-difference and likelihood-ratio estimators presented as possible inputs; experiments instantiate REINFORCE and A2C.
Scope
#actor-critic-update-scope
In the reported actor-critic implementation, SVPG updates policy parameters; critic parameters retain ordinary TD-error-gradient updates.
Scope
#experimental-comparison-design
The paper evaluates interacting policies against independent-policy and pooled-data single-policy baselines on four continuous-control tasks, with matched total transition counts per training iteration.
⚠️ Curated Limitations & Negative Results
- Parameter-distribution entropy and state-conditional action entropy act on different random variables. Shared Stein updates do not make this identical to Soft Q-learning or amortized SVGD.
- The posterior interpretation requires a finite positive normalizer. The reported flat improper prior on an unbounded parameter space does not establish that condition. The experiments should not be described as exact posterior sampling.
- The finite population uses estimated return gradients and finite steps. The paper does not supply a general finite-particle convergence, exact-sampling, monotonically decreasing-KL or global-optimality guarantee for this practical algorithm.
- Eq9 divides by alpha, so alpha=0 is not a directly defined substitution. A separately rescaled zero-temperature limit still combines policy gradients through the kernel. Approximate independent-policy updates additionally require negligible off-diagonal weighted-gradient contributions; with the reported median-adaptive RBF bandwidth, uniformly increasing all particle separations leaves kernel values unchanged and does not by itself establish independence.
- Kernel choice, high-dimensional parameter geometry and bandwidth are consequential. The median-distance RBF rule is empirical; its bandwidth becomes zero for a zero median unless an additional safeguard is supplied. Coincident-particle degeneracy and a universally effective kernel are not resolved here. Euclidean repulsion follows from the stated RBF derivative with a fixed chosen positive bandwidth, not from positive definiteness alone.
- Parameter separation need not imply useful behavioral diversity. The state-visitation comparison is a t-SNE visualization of four selected policies and explicitly admits projection artifacts.
- Equal transition counts do not establish equal wall-clock cost. SVPG and the independent baseline select the best-return agent; the joint baseline trains a single policy.
- Table1 does not support uniform superiority on its episode column: A2C Double Pendulum lists46 for Joint and199 for SVPG. Thresholds are relative to each policy’s own best return, and the wording for negative returns is insufficient to infer a shared performance target.
- The empirical scope is four rllab continuous-control tasks, five reruns and the specified policy architecture, gradient estimators, particle count and hyperparameters; no broad RL or universal performance claim follows.
- The source versions disagree on log-standard-deviation parameterization: arXivv1 says a vector, while the official UAI version says a linear function. Code was not inspected to resolve the difference.
- The rescaled exploration/exploitation expression in UAI Section5.4 multiplies Eq9’s flat-prior direction by alpha and omits the averaging factor; it illustrates relative weights, not a numerically identical fixed-step update.
- Natural-policy-gradient, TRPO variants, adaptive temperature schedules and layer-wise kernels are proposed future directions, not demonstrated implementations or guarantees in this paper.

related_match | In this scientific preparation, SVPG is a policy optimization algorithm serving the pinned reinforcement-learning task, which is an AIO MachineLearningTask. This algorithm-to-task relationship asserts neither equivalence nor subclass or broad-match inclusion. Parameterized policies need not use the neural architecture of the reported experiments. Root accepted this draft recommendation against the inspected historical snapshot; fresh canonical-time context remains required. |
