Usage-based true online TD(lambda)
Algorithms AIMech:UsageBasedTrueOnlineTDLambda DRAFT
An on-policy linear state-value prediction algorithm that combines componentwise inverse feature-usage step sizes with a component-scaled Dutch eligibility trace and a correction using the previous weight vector’s prediction at the current feature.
Identity Notes & Concept Scope
The selected source-defined linear on-policy prediction algorithm combines inverse feature-usage steps with a scaled Dutch trace and a changing-prediction correction. It differs from the base true-online TD host through its usage adaptation and from usage-based ordinary TD through trace scaling and the correction. The matched on-policy specialization of WIS-TD does not make the full off-policy algorithm an exact alias. Existing owner 264 retains seven prior IDs and five resolutions; Mahmood and Sutton 2015 specifies this adaptation. The fresh collection after PR389 merged, on 15 October 2026 at 18:42:28–18:45:19 UTC, covered 775 maintained native and 442 pinned AIO records. IDs, local IDs, names, aliases and scoped synonyms supplied 4,843 identity fields. Canonical names and explicit source spellings, including Greek lambda, produced no normalized candidate collision. Four fixed-string searches included ignored and hidden paths and retained 6,064 occurrences in 1,351 distinct content groups. Two supporting agents read all grouped contents in disjoint partitions; root read all 37 filtered candidate-named groups, twelve normalized neighbor definitions, 29 fields and full owners 264,265,266 and269. Candidate-named matches are source-lead, history, review and existing-neighbor context. All 1,216 pre-WIS-TD inventory rows and the newly merged WIS-TD record were reconciled at the actual base. Historical research snapshots remain separately dated. This supports a bounded identity decision for these roots, probes and pinned AIO snapshot; it does not claim a manual semantic reading of every corpus record or worldwide absence.
Claims & Grounded Evidence
6 Claims
Mechanism
#on-policy-usage-true-online-host
Usage-based true online TD(lambda), called U-TO-TD(lambda) in the source, is an on-policy linear state-value prediction algorithm with a specified adaptive componentwise step schedule. The source combines the usage schedule with true-online TD and gives a component-scaled trace and prior-prediction correction. It does not define a control or action-selection rule.
Mechanism
#usage-before-component-step
Using componentwise multiplication ⊙, update u_(t+1)=(1-eta*(phi_t⊙phi_t))⊙u_t+phi_t⊙phi_t, then compute alpha_(t+1) as the componentwise reciprocal of new u_(t+1), with a reciprocal at zero defined as zero. Algorithm 5 initializes u_0=u_init*1 and e_(-1)=0, with chosen theta_0, u_init>=0 and eta>=0.
Mechanism
#component-scaled-dutch-eligibility
Let a_t=alpha_(t+1)⊙phi_t and q_t=gamma_t*lambda_t. The trace is e_t=a_t+q_t*[e_(t-1)-a_t*(phi_t^T*e_(t-1))]. The new step-size vector enters both the current-feature term and the correction to the old trace. This scaled Dutch recurrence differs from an ordinary accumulating trace followed by componentwise scaling of its final update.
Mechanism
#stored-prediction-weight-correction
Define C_t=theta_(t-1)^T*phi_t and a_t=alpha_(t+1)⊙phi_t. With new e_t, update theta_(t+1)=theta_t+a_t*(C_t-theta_t^T*phi_t)+(R_(t+1)+gamma_(t+1)*theta_t^T*phi_(t+1)-C_t)*e_t. All theta_t predictions use pre-update weights. C_t is the previous weight vector evaluated at the current feature, not the current-weight prediction or a next-state prediction recomputed after updating. Algorithm 5 has no auxiliary GTD weights or provisional state.
Scope
#matched-on-policy-forward-specialization
Setting all importance ratios to one in WIS-TD(lambda) removes the provisional correction from its main update and gives the usage, eligibility and weight recurrences of Algorithm 5. With the same linear realized feature sequence, initialization and causal step choices, the source-defined finite-horizon WIS-TD forward/backward correspondence specializes to this on-policy construction. This is correspondence to that specified forward update, not a convergence assertion.
Scope
#zero-decay-and-initial-cancellation
For defined finite step vectors and predictions, gamma_t*lambda_t=0 makes e_t=a_t=alpha_(t+1)⊙phi_t, so the two old-prediction terms cancel and the weight increment is a_t*delta_t, where delta_t=R_(t+1)+gamma_(t+1)*theta_t^T*phi_(t+1)-theta_t^T*phi_t. With e_(-1)=0, the first trace is also a_0 and the first weight update has the same cancellation for any finite initial old prediction. These statements do not identify the complete algorithm with accumulating usage-based TD at other trace settings.
⚠️ Curated Limitations & Negative Results
- This identity is the named usage-based true-online prediction algorithm with its specified componentwise schedule. It is not arbitrary adaptive true online TD, a standalone Dutch trace, accumulating usage-based TD, true online Sarsa control or WIS-TO-GTD. Its on-policy overlap with WIS-TD is a specialization, not an exact whole-scope alias.
- Finite-horizon linear forward/backward correspondence does not establish convergence, stable weights, an unbiased objective-gradient step, monotonic improvement or universal empirical advantage. The source explicitly leaves convergence analysis of the new algorithms for future work. The reported on-policy task comparisons retain their representation and parameter-search scope.
- Bare eta>=0 does not ensure positive usage for arbitrary feature magnitudes. The scalar phi=1, u_init=0, eta=3 recurrence gives usage 1 then -1. Feature-scaled decay restrictions and nonnegative initialization can support nonnegative usage, but zero usage can still occur. Mapping its reciprocal to zero does not guarantee bounded steps or stable value predictions.
- The varying componentwise step must remain inside the printed scaled Dutch recurrence. Moving it outside an ordinary trace, substituting a constant-step unscaled convention or recomputing C_t using current weights changes the method. The previous-weight prediction is a timing dependency, not a claim that feature generation may depend arbitrarily on the changing weights.
- Algorithm 5 does not explicitly initialize theta_(-1). Its first theta update cancels any finite old prediction when the initial trace is zero, but an executable specification must still initialize stored state explicitly. Unlike WIS-TD, this algorithm has no provisional d update whose first value depends on that old prediction; the two initialization questions must not be conflated.
- Theorems and tabular endpoint statements retain their source assumptions about representation, initialization, observed targets and return construction. Theorem 1 does not require invented independent or exogenous targets, and lambda=1 alone is not an exact sample-average guarantee for arbitrary features or another host. Linear prediction is distinct from nonlinear representation learning and action-value control. Dense O(n) vector bookkeeping excludes feature construction and does not imply active-feature-only complexity.
- The evidence is the acquired eighteen-page author combined paper and Appendix A, with native-text correspondence to the retained official main paper and supplement; the embedded 2016 creation timestamp does not establish a scientific revision. This record follows Algorithm 5. The literal previous-Dutch-trace term in the separate WIS-TO-GTD Algorithm 3 remains unresolved rather than silently repaired. No complete proof, author-code correctness or benchmark reproduction is certified.
