WIS-GTD(lambda)
Algorithms AIMech:WISGTDLambda DRAFT
A linear off-policy state-value prediction algorithm that combines an importance-weighted accumulating eligibility trace and an auxiliary GTD correction with componentwise main-weight step sizes derived from feature usage, retaining a separate scalar step size for the auxiliary weights.
Identity Notes & Concept Scope
The selected source-defined linear off-policy prediction algorithm combines inverse feature-usage main step sizes, an ordinary importance-weighted accumulating trace and a scalar auxiliary GTD update. Its complete update differs from WIS-TD with provisional weights, the three-trace true-online GTD host and the two on-policy usage-based methods. Conditional reductions do not make those algorithms exact aliases. Existing eligibility owner 264 retains seven earlier IDs and five resolutions; its historical Sutton pointer is discovery context, while Mahmood and Sutton 2015 supplies this method. The fresh collection after PR389 merged, on 15 October 2026 at 18:42:28–18:45:19 UTC, covered 775 maintained native and 442 pinned AIO records. IDs, local IDs, names, aliases and scoped synonyms supplied 4,843 identity fields. Canonical names and explicit source spellings, including Greek lambda, produced no normalized candidate collision. Four fixed-string searches included ignored and hidden paths and retained 6,064 occurrences in 1,351 distinct content groups. Two supporting agents read all grouped contents in disjoint partitions; root read all 37 filtered candidate-named groups, twelve normalized neighbor definitions, 29 fields and full owners 264,265,266 and269. Candidate-named matches are source-lead, history, review and existing-neighbor context. All 1,216 pre-WIS-TD inventory rows and the newly merged WIS-TD record were reconciled at the actual base. Historical research snapshots remain separately dated. This supports a bounded identity decision for these roots, probes and pinned AIO snapshot; it does not claim a manual semantic reading of every corpus record or worldwide absence.
Claims & Grounded Evidence

Mechanism
#linear-off-policy-gtd-host
WIS-GTD(lambda) evaluates a target policy pi from transitions sampled under a behavior policy b using a fixed linear state-value representation V_t(s)=theta_t^T*phi(s). It uses the current action ratio rho_t=pi(A_t|S_t)/b(A_t|S_t), state-dependent discount gamma and bootstrapping lambda in [0,1], and the source-defined usage schedule for its main parameter vector. It is a policy-evaluation procedure, not an action-selection or policy-improvement rule.
Mechanism
#shared-usage-state-and-new-step
Let ⊙ denote componentwise multiplication, h_t=1-eta*(phi_t⊙phi_t), and q_t=gamma_t*lambda_t. Update u_(t+1)=h_t⊙u_t+rho_t*(phi_t⊙phi_t)+(rho_t-1)*q_t*(h_t⊙v_t) and v_(t+1)=q_t*rho_t*(h_t⊙v_t)+rho_t*(phi_t⊙phi_t), using old v_t in both right sides. Set alpha_(t+1) to the componentwise reciprocal of new u_(t+1), with the source convention that a reciprocal at zero is zero. The algorithm initializes u_0=u_init*1, v_0=0 and e_(-1)=0, with chosen theta_0, w_0, u_init>=0, eta>=0 and beta>=0.
Mechanism
#importance-weighted-accumulating-trace
The eligibility trace is e_t=rho_t*(gamma_t*lambda_t*e_(t-1)+phi_t). Form delta_t=R_(t+1)+gamma_(t+1)*theta_t^T*phi_(t+1)-theta_t^T*phi_t from pre-update theta_t. This accumulating trace uses the current ratio rho_t and current gamma_t*lambda_t; it is not the component-scaled Dutch trace of WIS-TD or a stored previous-ratio trace.
Mechanism
#main-and-auxiliary-update-timing
Using new e_t and alpha_(t+1), update theta_(t+1)=theta_t+alpha_(t+1)⊙(delta_t*e_t)-alpha_(t+1)⊙[gamma_(t+1)*(1-lambda_(t+1))*(e_t^T*w_t)*phi_(t+1)] and w_(t+1)=w_t+beta*[delta_t*e_t-(w_t^T*phi_t)*phi_t]. Both right sides use old w_t and the same pre-update theta_t through delta_t. The main correction uses the next-state gamma and lambda. Beta remains scalar; the source leaves usage adaptation of the auxiliary update outside this algorithm.
Scope
#qualified-on-policy-usage-td-reduction
When all rho values are one, the v-dependent correction disappears from the usage update and the eligibility recurrence is on-policy accumulating TD. With beta=0 and w_0=0, w remains zero and the complete main update reduces to usage-based TD(lambda), under matching initial values and feature sequence. Beta=0 alone freezes an arbitrary w_0 and does not in general remove the main auxiliary correction.
Scope
#usage-forward-scope-and-linear-cost
The usage schedule is the backward recurrence whose step sizes Theorem 5 equates with the specified forward usage construction in Equations 18–20. This shared step-size correspondence does not identify WIS-GTD weights with the separate WIS-TD forward weight update of Theorem 6. Algorithm 2 uses a fixed number of length-n vectors and O(n) dense arithmetic and storage per transition; this concerns its update bookkeeping.
⚠️ Curated Limitations & Negative Results
- This identity is the source-defined usage-adapted accumulating GTD algorithm. It is not base GTD, WIS-TD with Dutch and provisional state, true online GTD, WIS-TO-GTD or an isolated usage operator. Shared state-value targets and parameter specializations do not make the complete methods aliases.
- The source leaves convergence analysis of the new algorithms for future work. Usage equality does not establish an unbiased objective-gradient step, stable weights, monotonic improvement, optimality or universal empirical superiority. Target-policy action support under behavior and well-defined finite ratios, returns and relevant moments remain separate requirements.
- Bare eta>=0 does not guarantee positive usage for arbitrary feature magnitudes. For example, the scalar on-policy recurrence with phi=1, u_init=0 and eta=3 gives usage 1 and then -1. Conditions such as 0<=1-eta*phi_t(i)^2<=1, nonnegative ratios, gamma*lambda in [0,1] and matched u>=v>=0 initialization support nonnegative usage; they do not ensure strictly positive usage, bounded reciprocal steps or convergence. The reciprocal-zero convention is not a stability result.
- On-policy beta=0 does not remove a nonzero initial auxiliary vector. At lambda_t=0 the eligibility is rho_t*phi_t, but the next-state auxiliary correction generally remains. When the next lambda is one its correction multiplier vanishes, yet the main method still uses the accumulating host. Neither endpoint alone makes the method an exact Monte Carlo average or an exact self-normalized WIS estimator.
- Old v, old w and pre-update theta timing are part of the construction. Using newly updated w in the main correction, adapting beta with the main usage vector, or substituting a Dutch trace changes the displayed algorithm. Finite-horizon usage correspondence is not permission to transfer WIS-TD main-weight or objective claims to this host.
- The selected method uses fixed linear features and predicts state values. Arbitrary nonlinear or learned representations, action-value control and policy improvement require separate assessment. O(n) dense vector bookkeeping excludes feature construction and environment interaction and does not guarantee active-feature-only cost or a universal wall-clock advantage.
- The evidence is the acquired eighteen-page author combined paper and Appendix A, whose native text matches the retained official main paper and supplement. The embedded 2016 file-creation date is not a verified scientific revision date. Section 6 and Algorithm 2 specify this method; the separate Algorithm 3 WIS-TO-GTD correction-trace ambiguity is not silently resolved here. Reported finite prediction-task comparisons do not certify source code, all proofs or benchmark reproducibility.
