WIS-TD(lambda)
Algorithms AIMech:WISTDLambda DRAFT
A linear off-policy state-value prediction algorithm that combines component step sizes from feature usage, a scaled Dutch eligibility trace and provisional weights to implement its specified forward target with importance weighting.
Identity Notes & Concept Scope
The selected identity is the source-defined WIS-TD(lambda) linear off-policy state-value prediction algorithm, with inverse feature-usage step sizes, a scaled Dutch trace and a provisional correction state. The fresh post-merge collection on 15 October 2026 at 17:56:44–17:57:57 UTC covered 774 maintained native and 442 pinned AIO records. IDs, local IDs, names, aliases and scoped synonym values supplied 4,840 identity fields; candidate names and explicit source spellings, including Greek lambda, had no normalized collision. Four fixed-string searches included ignored and hidden paths and retained 4,396 occurrences in 877 distinct content groups. Two supporting agents read the complete grouped contents in disjoint partitions; root separately read all eight WIS-TD-named groups, the eleven normalized neighbor definitions and current owners 264,265,266 and269. Candidate-named hits are unresolved source-lead/history references, not an existing WIS-TD record. Generic TD prediction, base true-online TD/GTD, Dutch and replacing trace components, and the separate Sarsa/Q-learning control methods have different complete scopes. The WIS-GTD and usage-based methods remain separately specified residuals, while the WIS-TO-GTD printed recurrence remains unresolved. The historical 1,214-row research inventory and two intervening Dutch/GTD additions were verified at the actual merged base. This is bounded identity evidence for the retained roots/probes/snapshot, not a manual semantic review of every record or global absence. Existing eligibility owner 264 retains its six IDs, all four prior resolution objects and its historical Sutton 1988 discovery pointer; the separately inspected Mahmood–Sutton 2015 paper defines this addition.

Mechanism
#linear-off-policy-usage-adaptation
WIS-TD(lambda) is a linear state-value prediction algorithm for a target policy pi using transitions sampled from a behavior policy b. It uses V_t(s)=theta_t^T*phi(s), rho_t=pi(A_t|S_t)/b(A_t|S_t), state-dependent discount gamma and bootstrapping lambda in [0,1], and component step sizes derived from a feature-usage estimate. The source constructs its forward target from WIS-SGD-2; the method is not an action-selection or policy-improvement rule.
Mechanism
#usage-state-and-step-size
Write elementwise multiplication as ⊙, let a_t=1-eta*(phi_t⊙phi_t), and let q_t=gamma_t*lambda_t. Update u_(t+1)=a_t⊙u_t+rho_t*(phi_t⊙phi_t)+(rho_t-1)*q_t*(a_t⊙v_t) and v_(t+1)=q_t*rho_t*(a_t⊙v_t)+rho_t*(phi_t⊙phi_t). Both right sides use old v_t. Then set alpha_(t+1) to the componentwise reciprocal of u_(t+1), using the source convention that a reciprocal at zero is zero. Algorithm 1 initializes u_0=u_init*1, v_0=0, e_(-1)=0 and d_0=0, with chosen theta_0, u_init>=0 and eta>=0. Equation 17 additionally specifies theta_(-1)=0.
Mechanism
#component-scaled-dutch-trace
With b_t=alpha_(t+1)⊙phi_t and q_t=gamma_t*lambda_t, the trace is e_t=rho_t*b_t+q_t*rho_t*(e_(t-1)-rho_t*b_t*(phi_t^T*e_(t-1))). It uses the newly computed component step vector and the old trace in its inner product. This is a step-size-weighted Dutch trace; it is distinct from the provisional weight vector d_t and from an auxiliary GTD gradient-correction estimate.
Mechanism
#coupled-parameter-and-provisional-update
Let b_t=alpha_(t+1)⊙phi_t, q_t=gamma_t*lambda_t, C_t=theta_(t-1)^T*phi_t, and B_t=d_t-rho_t*b_t*(phi_t^T*d_t). Using the new e_t, update theta_(t+1)=theta_t+rho_t*b_t*(C_t-theta_t^T*phi_t)+(R_(t+1)+gamma_(t+1)*theta_t^T*phi_(t+1)-C_t)*e_t+(rho_t-1)*q_t*B_t. The provisional state is d_(t+1)=q_t*rho_t*B_t+(R_(t+1)+theta_t^T*phi_(t+1)-C_t)*e_t. Both right sides use old theta_t and d_t. The provisional innovation has no gamma_(t+1) factor in the source, and C_t preserves the preceding-weight prediction timing.
Scope
#specified-forward-backward-correspondence
Theorems 5 and 6 identify the backward step sizes and weights with the source-defined forward constructions, for the same realized linear feature sequence, initial states and causal step choices. The forward view uses the return of Equation 17, discount- and bootstrapping-aware importance weighting in Equations 18–20, and the weight update of Equation 21. Its generalized online-equivalence construction includes a second target-difference term, which is represented by the provisional state in the backward procedure. This is correspondence to the specified finite-horizon replay.
Scope
#linear-dense-update-cost
The backward WIS-TD(lambda) procedure uses O(n) arithmetic and O(n) vector state per transition for n dense features, instead of replaying all past forward updates at each new horizon. The usage vectors, eligibility trace, parameter vector and provisional vector have fixed dimension; the cost statement concerns this backward bookkeeping rather than feature generation or an entire control system.
⚠️ Curated Limitations & Negative Results
- The selected identity is WIS-TD(lambda), not WIS-GTD, WIS-TO-GTD, usage-based TD, usage-based true online TD, WIS-LSTD, an isolated Dutch trace or a generic importance-sampling estimator. When all rho values are one and states and step-size conventions are matched, its theta update specializes to usage-based true online TD; this endpoint does not make the full algorithms exact aliases. The separately named variants retain their own recurrences and source questions.
- Finite-horizon replay correspondence does not establish an unbiased objective-gradient step, convergence, stability, monotonic improvement, optimal policy learning or universal superiority. The source explicitly leaves convergence analysis for future work. Target-policy action support under behavior and well-defined returns, ratios and relevant moments are separate statistical requirements.
- The source explicitly states that WIS-SGD-2 no longer reduces to ordinary tabular WIS. Its WIS-SGD-1 weighted-average result requires the stated one-hot, initialization and recency conditions; it must not be transferred to every WIS-named algorithm. For general overlapping features, reciprocal usage is not a full least-squares solve or a guarantee of an exact sample average, and self-normalization alone does not generally imply finite-sample unbiasedness.
- Bare eta>=0 does not guarantee positive usage for arbitrary feature magnitudes. Conditions such as eta*phi_t(i)^2<=1, together with nonnegative importance weights and matched nonnegative usage initialization, support nonnegative forward usage; zero components can still occur. The source reciprocal-at-zero convention does not prove positivity, bounded steps or statistical validity. Importance ratios can exceed one, and traces and provisional weights are not coordinatewise clipped.
- The old-v, old-d and old-weight dependencies and the new alpha_(t+1) timing are part of the construction. Equation 17 sets theta_(-1)=0 although Algorithm 1 does not repeat that initialization. Cancellation of the first theta correction does not make this prior prediction irrelevant to the first provisional d update. Adding a next-discount factor to the printed provisional innovation, substituting a GTD auxiliary update, or recomputing prior predictions with current weights changes the specified procedure.
- The forward/backward derivation concerns the specified linear representation and matched realized feature/target sequence. Generic nonlinear or parameter-dependent feature learning does not automatically inherit it. State-value prediction is distinct from action-value control, and a lambda endpoint alone does not identify the method with every off-policy Monte Carlo construction. Dense linear bookkeeping does not imply cost only in the current nonzero features or a universal wall-clock advantage.
- The declared evidence is the acquired author combined paper and Appendix A. Its first ten native-text pages match the official paper and its last eight match the official supplement; an embedded 2016 creation date is not a verified revision date. The source has bounded display issues in the Equation 12 horizon notation and nearby unrolling, the lambda-zero bootstrap illustration on p. 6, and intermediate Appendix A.2/A.6 lines. The explicit final WIS-TD recurrences remain separately identifiable; no complete proof certification, official erratum, author-code correctness or benchmark reproduction is asserted. Experimental comparisons retain their reported task, representation and parameter-search scope.
