tubulin spool

cellstructuremech:tubulin_spool · Cytoskeleton · Other · Proposed

A compact spool-like tubulin-positive cytoskeletal structure observed in kareniacean dinoflagellates. In Takayama helix, ultrastructure expansion microscopy resolves perinuclear and posterior spools that appear continuous with microtubules. The name denotes the assembled structure, not a tubulin protein or the entire cortical microtubule array. [DOI:10.1016/j.cell.2025.09.027]

Figure 2: D-E show tubulin-positive perinuclear and posterior spools in Takayama helix by fixed-cell ultrastructure expansion microscopy; D includes tubulin in magenta and DNA in blue, and E includes enlarged views and diameter summaries. A-C and F-G contain other taxa or other cytoskeletal observations, not additional spool examples. The legend gives 5 micrometre scale bars adjusted for expansion, but Methods says bars are not adjusted; no native-size measurement is inferred here.

TubulinProteinpart ofInterPro:IPR000217UNKNOWNTubulin-family material detected in the spool by post-expansion immunolabeling. The family grounding does not identify every tubulin subtype or an exact Takayama gene product, and the study did not test assembly essentiality.
  • DOI:10.1016/j.cell.2025.09.027 Figure 2D-E and the microtubule-array Results identify tubulin-positive spools. Table S1 includes spool-positive RCC10719 material labeled with E7 anti-beta-tubulin.
  • InterPro:IPR000217 Issuing InterPro API verified the Tubulin family and its broad subtype scope.
