An individual mineralized scale produced by a coccolithophore, with a characteristic arrangement of calcite crystals. Coccoliths form elements of the external cell covering, the coccosphere, and can be shed as free scales. [DOI:10.1126/sciadv.adc8728]

Calcidiscus leptoporus, Figure 1. A: SEM of a coccolith-covered cell beside a schematic cross-section of one scale. B-E: SEM views of individual coccoliths from distal, proximal and side orientations. F: AFM surface-height maps and three-dimensional projections of selected regions. The two shields and connecting stem characterize this example, not every coccolith type; AFM scan areas are not whole-scale dimensions.

  • DOI:10.1021/jacs.6c02151 Results and Figure 1 characterize calcite units in Calcidiscus leptoporus coccoliths; the illustrated two-shield morphology is not generalized to all coccoliths.
  • DOI:10.1093/pnasnexus/pgag104 Results describe calcite rhombohedra assembled into holococcoliths, rather than the intergrown crystal architecture typical of heterococcoliths.
coccolith-associated organic materialOtherpart ofReviewed label only (reviewed name; no accession asserted)UNKNOWNOrganic material associated with the mineral scale, including the base plate. In tested Emiliania huxleyi coccoliths, removal of surface organics reduces adsorption to cells.
  • DOI:10.1126/sciadv.adc8728 Figure 3 compares untreated and hypochlorite-oxidized coccoliths: SEM shows loss of organic base-plate material while the crystalline structure remains, and oxidized coccoliths attach less efficiently. This does not identify a specific adhesion molecule or test de novo assembly without organics.
  • DOI:10.1093/pnasnexus/pgag104 Results and Figure 1 identify an organic base plate in mature holococcoliths; this does not establish a universal nucleation-template mechanism.
