An engineered electrogenic bioanode enrichment derived from mangrove sediment collected in Vitoria, Espirito Santo, Brazil and acclimated in dual-chamber microbial fuel cells first on 1000.0 mg L-1 sodium acetate and then on increasing benzene concentrations up to 330.0 mg L-1. In the benzene-fed biofilm, Bacillus and Arcobacter became the two dominant 16S rRNA genus-level assignments, while Pelobacter and Pseudomonas remained lower-abundance detected genera. The acclimated MFC removed 98.7 +/- 2.4% benzene over 96 h while generating voltage on the bioanode.

Ecological Interactions
The graph shows only explicitly linked interaction participants. Community members without an asserted participant link are omitted; membership alone does not imply an interaction.
Benzene-fed bioanode composition shift
After sequential acclimation from acetate to benzene, relative 16S genus profiles showed Bacillus at 32.93% and Arcobacter at 30.28%, with Pelobacter and Pseudomonas also detected. These four canonical genera are a resolved subset, not a complete or necessarily active consortium. The compositional change supports substrate-associated selection but does not measure absolute expansion, niche partitioning, species identity or taxon-specific benzene degradation/electron transfer. Feed composition and biofilm acclimation changed together; no selective genus removal established the mediator of increased power.
Participating Taxa: Bacillus, Arcobacter, Pelobacter, Pseudomonas
Metabolites: benzene (CHEBI:16716 · MediaIngredientMech · CMMMech)
HYPOTHESIZED - substrate-associated community restructuring could increase the bioanode capacity for benzene conversion and electron transfer, as proposed by the authors. Whole-biofilm chemical and electrochemical measurements support performance, but relative genus enrichment does not isolate composition from substrate/acclimation effects or establish Bacillus and Arcobacter as necessary catalytic partners.

Benzene removal with voltage generation
The acclimated whole-biofilm MFC removed 98.7 +/- 2.4% of benzene within 96 h while generating electricity. Maximum voltage was 902.3 +/- 20.6 mV in cycle VI (250 mg/L benzene); the final 330 mg/L cycle VII reached 899.9 +/- 15.2 mV. Power density at 330 mg/L was 390.1 +/- 26 mW/m2 versus 238.8 +/- 19 with acetate, not a 100-fold acetate improvement. The abiotic control lacked sustained output voltage. Main-text GC/HPLC results report transient acetate/butyrate and final gaseous products, supporting whole-system conversion without tracing complete carbon fate or proving partner exchange. DET versus mediated transfer and catalytic roles of individual genera remain unresolved; the named participants are a partial roster.

KNOWLEDGE_GAP OPEN Resolve the species or MAG identities, full final-biofilm composition, genus-specific benzene-degradation genes, and stable raw 16S read accessions for the benzene-fed mangrove MFC bioanode.
The ACS Omega full text reports genus-level 16S abundances in the final benzene-fed MFC but does not expose species-level identities, raw sequence accessions, or a direct metagenomic assignment of benzene-degradation and electron-transfer genes to each genus. The source also reports a genus spelled Desulfurumonas at 1.64% abundance; that member was not curated here until the label can be resolved against NCBI or GTDB.

KNOWLEDGE_GAP OPEN Which members and electron-transfer routes mediate whole-bioanode performance?
Retain positive removal, product and electrochemical observations, while composition mediation remains HYPOTHESIZED. Relative genus profiles and other-strain literature cannot establish exact-system partner roles, niche partitioning, carbon balance or DET rather than MET. The prior #1124 removal of Bacillus PRIMARY_DEGRADER remains; Arcobacter non-graph role and Daphnia species metadata remain under #1586. Main Table 1 read, not separate supporting spectra/chromatograms or original figure pixels. #1583 repair adds no new structure.
