P pilus
A chaperone-usher adhesive pilus of uropathogenic Escherichia coli built from a PapA helical rod, a PapG-PapF-PapE tip fibrillum, a PapK adaptor that bridges the fibrillum to the rod, and a basal PapH terminator. The PapD chaperone delivers subunits to the PapC usher, which assembles the pilus, and the distal PapG adhesin binds host glycolipid receptors. [DOI:10.1128/ecosalplus.ESP-0007-2017]

Functions
- P pilus assembly — PapD delivers folded PapG, PapF, PapE, PapK, PapA, and PapH subunits to the PapC usher, which incorporates them in a defined order to build the tip fibrillum, PapK tip-to-rod adaptor, helical rod, and basal terminator of the P pilus.

- Gal-alpha(1-4)Gal-dependent adhesion — The distal PapG adhesin binds host globoseries glycolipids that present a Gal-alpha(1-4)Gal receptor epitope.

Mechanism graphs
PapC assembles the PapD-delivered P pilus tip and rod (ASSEMBLY)
PapD carries pilus subunits to the PapC usher. PapC initiates assembly with the distal PapG adhesin, then incorporates PapF and PapE to build the tip fibrillum, PapK to bridge the tip to the rod, PapA repeatedly to form the rod, and PapH to terminate and anchor the completed appendage.

Discussions
- CURATION_TODO (RESOLVED): Keep PapD and PapC out of the component table for this first P pilus record. PapD and PapC are required for ordered P pilus biogenesis and are therefore shown in the assembly graph, but this record denotes the extracellular appendage built from PapA, PapE, PapF, PapG, PapK, and PapH rather than the periplasmic chaperone or outer-membrane usher that polymerizes and secretes those subunits.
- CURATION_TODO (OPEN): Resolve exact source-neutral family groundings for the PapA, PapG, PapF, PapE, PapK, and PapH constituent subunits. The record intentionally uses reviewed labels for the E. coli P pilus subunits until InterPro, Pfam, or NCBIfam accessions can be verified without overclaiming a broader chaperone-usher domain as an exact subunit family.
