type I pilus
A mannose-sensitive adhesive bacterial pilus assembled by the chaperone-usher pathway. In the Escherichia coli model, a helical FimA rod carries an ordered FimH-FimG-FimF tip, is polymerized through the FimD usher, and ends in a basal FimI terminator. Other type I systems, including Salmonella, have different subunit inventories. [GO:0140621]
Synonyms: type 1 pilus; type 1 fimbria; mannose-sensitive pilus

Mechanism graphs
E. coli FimC and FimD polymerize the type I pilus tip and rod (ASSEMBLY)
In Escherichia coli, FimC carries folded pilus subunits to the outer-membrane FimD usher. FimD accepts the FimH adhesin, FimG adaptor, and FimF adaptor before adding FimA repeatedly into the helical rod, then the FimI terminator caps the basal end and anchors the rod at the usher.

Discussions
- CURATION_TODO (RESOLVED): Keep FimC and FimD out of the component table for this first type I pilus record. FimC and FimD are required for ordered pilus biogenesis and are therefore shown in the assembly graph, but this record denotes the extracellular appendage built from FimA, FimF, FimG, FimH and FimI rather than the periplasmic chaperone or outer-membrane usher that polymerizes and secretes those subunits.
- CURATION_TODO (OPEN): Resolve exact source-neutral family groundings for the FimA, FimG, FimF, FimH and FimI constituent subunits. The record intentionally uses reviewed labels for the E. coli type I pilus subunits until InterPro, Pfam or NCBIfam accessions can be verified without overclaiming a broader chaperone-usher domain as an exact subunit family.
- INTERPRETATION (RESOLVED): Keep the E. coli subunit model distinct from other type I pilus inventories. Mannose-sensitive type I pili occur in both E. coli and Salmonella, but shared subtype identity does not imply identical Fim subunits. The component roles and graph are explicitly the E. coli model; the broader taxonomic distribution is retained.
