nuclear microtubule
Any microtubule in the nucleus of a cell. [GO:0005880]
Part of: nucleus (GO:0005634)
Taxonomic distribution
NCBITaxon:4932Saccharomyces cerevisiae — COMMON: Budding yeast spindle pole bodies nucleate nuclear microtubules from their inner plaques. [DOI:10.1146/annurev.cellbio.20.022003.114106]
Canonical examples
NCBITaxon:4932Saccharomyces cerevisiae — Reference fungal model in which nuclear microtubules are organized by the nuclear face of the spindle pole body. [DOI:10.1146/annurev.cellbio.20.022003.114106]
Functions
- nuclear microtubule array organization — Nuclear microtubules form non-cytoplasmic tubulin-polymer arrays that can be organized from nuclear microtubule-organizing centers such as the budding-yeast SPB inner plaque.
GO:0005880GO:0005880 defines nuclear microtubules as microtubules in the nucleus.DOI:10.1146/annurev.cellbio.20.022003.114106Jaspersen and Winey 2004 reviewed the budding-yeast SPB inner plaque as the nuclear site for microtubule nucleation.
Mechanism graphs

Discussions
- INTERPRETATION (RESOLVED): Keep nuclear microtubules distinct from cytoplasmic microtubules and from array-specific spindle microtubules. GO:0005880 denotes microtubules in the nucleus and therefore differs from the cytoplasmic GO:0005881 class. It also differs from the GO:0005876 spindle microtubule class, which is defined by membership in a mitotic or meiotic spindle rather than by nuclear localization alone.
- CURATION_TODO (OPEN): Resolve exact source-neutral groundings for nuclear microtubule-associated proteins and nucleation complexes. This first nuclear microtubule record captures the GO-backed tubulin-polymer subtype and defers taxon-specific motors, plus-end factors, and gamma-tubulin nucleation complexes.
