Stentor Km fiber
A longitudinal cortical bundle of overlapping microtubule ribbons in Stentor, characterized ultrastructurally in S. coeruleus. Ribbons originate beside successive basal-body pairs and overlap alongside a ciliary row; the bundle is distinct from the deeper contractile myonemes. [DOI:10.1083/jcb.57.3.704]

Components
| Component | Type | Part of / acts on | Grounding | Genes | Stoichiometry | Essential | Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alpha tubulin | Protein | part of | InterPro:IPR002452 | UNKNOWN | Tubulin subunit of the microtubules forming the ribbons.
| ||
| Beta tubulin | Protein | part of | InterPro:IPR002453 | UNKNOWN | Partner tubulin subunit; depletion disrupts the normal cortical microtubule rows, without defining a minimal Km-fiber assembly requirement.

Functions
- Cell re-extension — Implicated in cell re-extension through relative displacement of overlapping ribbons; a bridge-driven motor cycle remains a model.
DOI:10.1083/jcb.57.3.704Results and Discussion compare contracted and relaxed cells. Reduced ribbon overlap accompanies extension; selective disruption of the two fiber systems was unsuccessful.

Discussions
- CURATION_TODO (RESOLVED): Distinguish the Km bundle from a single microtubule, myoneme or striated rootlet. Basal-body association and similar fiber names do not make different cortical assemblies equivalent.
- CURATION_TODO (OPEN): Identify the molecular bridges and test how Km fibers generate extension force. Morphological bridges do not identify a motor protein or prove an ATPase cycle.
- CURATION_TODO (RESOLVED): Keep neighboring organelles and broadly localized regulators outside the constituent list. Cortical localization alone does not establish membership of the Km bundle.
