An external cell covering of a coccolithophore assembled from individual mineralized scales called coccoliths. Its organization varies among taxa and cell states; the covering is distinct from a single coccolith and from the intracellular vesicle in which a coccolith forms. [DOI:10.1111/nph.15272]

Emiliania huxleyi CS-369 coccospheres, Figure 2. Six SEM panels (A-F) show different arrangements of interlocking coccolith scales around cells. White scale bars are 1 micrometre; red numbers identify neighboring plates around selected coccoliths, not the total number of plates in the covering. Whole-sphere plate estimates in the study depend on a counting assumption and are not universal coccosphere counts.

Its molecular composition and necessity for assembly are not established here.
  • DOI:10.1111/nph.15272 Figure 9, associated Results and fluorescence Methods show a FITC-Concanavalin-A-stained extracellular layer with patterned unstained regions after decalcification. The authors relate this layer to coccolith organization and contacts between incompletely covered daughter cells; the assay does not identify an exact adhesion molecule.
