fungal-type cell wall

GO:0009277 · Envelope · Envelope layer · Proposed

A rigid but dynamic carbohydrate- and glycoprotein-rich wall surrounding the fungal plasma membrane, built from a variable cross-linked matrix of glucans, wall glycoproteins, and often chitin and kept distinct from fungal capsules outside the wall. [GO:0009277]

Synonyms: chitin- and beta-glucan-containing cell wall; fungal cell wall

Glucans, chitin and mannoproteins form a fungal wall matrix (ASSEMBLY)

In well-studied fungal walls, branched beta-glucans form a cross-linked matrix with chitin and mannoproteins. This carbohydrate-rich matrix surrounds the plasma membrane to maintain shape and provide a fungal cell surface.
