Golgi apparatus
A membrane-bound cytoplasmic organelle of the endomembrane system that further processes the core oligosaccharides (e.g. N-glycans) added to proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum and packages them into membrane-bound vesicles. The Golgi apparatus operates at the intersection of the secretory, lysosomal, and endocytic pathways. [GO:0005794]
Synonyms: Golgi complex
Part of: GO:0012505 — endomembrane system (no local record)
Has part: Golgi membrane (GO:0000139); Golgi cisterna (GO:0031985)

Functions
- glycan processing and secretory sorting — The Golgi apparatus processes glycoprotein oligosaccharides and sorts membrane-bound cargo within the secretory, endocytic and lysosomal trafficking network.

- cisternal maturation — In budding yeast, individual Golgi cisternae mature from early to late cisternae while resident markers arrive and depart over time.

Yeast Golgi cisternae mature over time (FUNCTION)
Live imaging of Saccharomyces cerevisiae showed that Golgi cisternae change resident marker composition as they mature from early to late compartments.

Discussions
- CURATION_TODO (OPEN): Resolve exact source-neutral family groundings for Golgi SNARE trafficking proteins and resident glycosylation enzymes, or split the grouped cohorts where exact family terms exist. This first Golgi apparatus record avoids broad SNARE or glycosyltransferase domain groundings that would overclaim exact identity for Golgi-specific protein cohorts.
