mitochondrial crista
Any of the inward folds of the mitochondrial inner membrane. Their number, extent, and shape differ in mitochondria from different tissues and organisms. They appear to be devices for increasing the surface area of the mitochondrial inner membrane, where the enzymes of electron transport and oxidative phosphorylation are found. Their shape can vary with the respiratory state of the mitochondria. [GO:0030061]

Discussions
- CURATION_TODO (OPEN): Resolve exact source-neutral groundings for MICOS subunits, yeast ATP synthase dimerization subunits, and cardiolipin before curating them as separate crista components. The first mitochondrial crista record grounds MICOS and ATP synthase at source-neutral complex terms while avoiding guessed InterPro, UniProt, or ChEBI CURIEs for subunits and lipids whose exact cross-species boundary needs separate review.
