nuclear lumen
The volume enclosed by the nuclear inner membrane. [GO:0031981]
Part of: nucleus (GO:0005634)
Components
| Component | Type | Part of / acts on | Grounding | Genes | Stoichiometry | Essential | Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| nuclear chromosome | Other | part of | GO:0000228 | Chromosome structure that encodes the eukaryotic nuclear genome inside the nuclear lumen.
| |||
| nucleolus | Other | part of | GO:0005730 | Dense nuclear body that concentrates ribosomal DNA transcription, pre-rRNA processing, and early ribosomal subunit assembly in the nuclear lumen.

Functions
- nuclear lumen compartmentalization — The nuclear lumen is the nucleus-internal volume that contains nuclear chromosomes and nuclear bodies such as the nucleolus.
GO:0031981GO:0031981 defines the nuclear lumen as the volume enclosed by the nuclear inner membrane.GO:0000228GO places nuclear chromosomes in the nuclear lumen during cell-cycle phases when the nucleus is intact.GO:0005730GO places the nucleolus in the nuclear lumen.
Mechanism graphs
The nuclear inner membrane encloses the nuclear lumen (FUNCTION)
The nuclear inner membrane delimits the nuclear lumen, and the nuclear lumen contains nuclear chromosomes and the nucleolus.

Discussions
- INTERPRETATION (RESOLVED): Should nucleoplasm be added as an exact synonym of nuclear lumen? This record follows GO:0031981 for the whole inner-membrane-enclosed nuclear volume and grounds contained nucleolar and chromosomal substructures separately. No exact synonymy between nuclear lumen and nucleoplasm was verified in this pass.
- CURATION_TODO (OPEN): Resolve remaining nuclear-lumen bodies and substructures before expanding the component list. This first nuclear-lumen record grounds the nuclear chromosome and nucleolus because existing CellStructureMech records already curate their GO boundaries, but GO:0031981 can contain additional nuclear bodies and subregions whose exact GO and literature boundaries need separate review.
