Functions
- vacuolar lumen compartmentalization — The vacuolar lumen is the membrane-enclosed compartment in which vacuolar contents and soluble activities are isolated from the cytosol.
GO:0005775GO:0005775 defines the vacuolar lumen as the volume enclosed by the vacuolar membrane.DOI:10.1016/j.bbamcr.2008.08.003Li and Kane 2009 review the membrane-enclosed yeast vacuole lumen as the site of lysosome-like storage and degradation.
Mechanism graphs
The vacuolar membrane encloses the vacuolar lumen (FUNCTION)
The vacuolar lumen is the internal vacuolar compartment bounded by the vacuolar membrane.

Discussions
- INTERPRETATION (RESOLVED): Keep the vacuolar membrane as the boundary of the vacuolar lumen rather than as a lumen component. GO:0005775 defines the vacuolar lumen by the surrounding vacuolar membrane, so the membrane is represented as a boundary node and not as a molecular component of the lumen.
