functional cellular rejuvenation
traitmech:000710 · CLASS · PROPOSED
A physiological phenotype in which age-associated loss of cellular performance or replicative potential is reversed in a microbial cell or reset in its descendants.

-
DOI:10.1242/jcs.86.1.263This is the first description of the restoration of a senescent defect by microinjection of young cytoplasmic components into Paramecium.
-
DOI:10.1038/s41467-018-06154-9As this convergence was now downwards, doubling times decreased with each generation.
-
DOI:10.1126/science.1204349Gametes (spores) generated by aged cells show the same replicative potential as gametes generated by young cells.
-
DOI:10.3390/microorganisms11010082The cloned immaturin gene induces sexual rejuvenation in both mature and senescent cells by microinjection.
-
DOI:10.1016/j.isci.2022.103765Some cells rejuvenated immediately, even after extended starvation, but others only restarted growth after a delay or not at all.

Discussions and Knowledge Gaps
Assess the functional qualifier and distinguish same-cell recovery from descendant reset.
Require an age-linked deficit and a measured recovery or replicative-potential reset, retaining the endpoint, age axis, comparison group, treated unit, conditions and persistence. Recovery of one function need not restore all functions, be permanent or extend lifespan. Descendant recovery must not be reported as repair of the old mother. Marker changes, lifespan extension alone, prevention without prior loss and sexual immaturity alone are insufficient. Bare cellular rejuvenation has broader source usages and is not an exact synonym. Autogamy, gametogenesis and dormancy exit are not themselves this phenotype; neither is replicative aging with functional decline. Culture age is not interchangeable with lineage age. METPO:1000059 phenotype is a conservative parent, with no reparenting of existing records or asserted external equivalence.
Resolve strain provenance and endpoint-specific mechanisms before adding examples or causal edges.
This is a reusable physiological outcome, not a gene, protein, sequence feature or intervention. No canonical example or protein-resolved graph is asserted pending strain provenance and mechanistic review. Bacterial model-derived damage and fluorescent aggregates are not direct proof of a universal rejuvenation chemistry. Studies need not share a mechanism. The 2011 PDF/metadata byte mismatch is retained, not explained away by its added cover. MED/Crossref notice fields and accessible primary pages were checked on 2026-10-12; incomplete publisher access prevents an exhaustive notice-absence claim. Ignored/hidden local and pending-source searches plus pinned and current released METPO found no exact term in the inspected scope. No ontology upgrade or discovery-exhaustion claim follows.

MINTED_TRAITMECH_ID · codex
Added functional cellular rejuvenation with five primary DOI references and directly checked snippets; retained same-cell, descendant, maturation and dormancy boundaries and access limits. Reserved 000710, v586 and 1066300-1066399 after ignored/hidden, registered historical-tree and pending-PR checks. Examples and mechanism graph deferred. Existing records unchanged; timestamp is the observed UTC curation decision.

CORRECTED_FIGURE_ATTRIBUTION · codex
Corrected issue #1893: Figure 1 supports gamete replicative-potential reset; Figure 4 tests vegetative lifespan extension. Preserved definition, DOI, snippet, status, checksum limitation and original event. The source sidecar retains its historical assessment with an explicit superseding correction. Timestamp is the observed UTC correction decision.

- CREATE — Add functional cellular rejuvenation with endpoint-qualified evidence
Five primary DOI references distinguish recovery in aged cells, descendant-lineage recovery and gamete replicative-potential reset from marker change, maturation-state reset and dormancy exit. Reserved traitmech:000710 and v586 with block 1066300-1066399 after ignored/hidden and pending-change checks; canonical examples and mechanism graph deferred with explicit source limits.

- EDIT — Separate gamete reset from vegetative-extension figure evidence
Address issue #1893 with guarded correction: Figure 1 supports gamete replicative-potential reset; Figure 4 is the separate vegetative lifespan-extension experiment. DOI, snippet, definition, status, original event and checksum limitation are preserved. The source sidecar retains its original assessment plus an explicit superseding correction.
