ventral disc
A specialized organelle in Giardia trophozoites that supports attachment to host intestinal epithelium. Its spiral microtubule array bears dorsal microribbons linked by crossbridges, and a lateral crest surrounds the disc edge. [DOI:10.1371/journal.pone.0043783]

Mechanism graphs
Giardia ventral-disc architecture supports trophozoite attachment (FUNCTION)
The Giardia ventral disc is built on a spiral microtubule scaffold with microribbons, crossbridges and a lateral crest; this domed cytoskeletal architecture supports trophozoite attachment to host epithelium.

Discussions
- CURATION_TODO (OPEN): Resolve exact source-neutral groundings and finer boundaries for Giardia ventral-disc tubulins, DAPs, giardins, microribbon proteins, crossbridge proteins and lateral-crest proteins. The first ventral disc record curates broad tubulin and disc-associated protein cohorts because the literature defines alpha/beta-tubulin microtubules and many DAP or giardin constituents with distinct substructure localizations, but this pass did not verify exact protein-family CURIEs or stable complex boundaries for each substructure.
- INTERPRETATION (RESOLVED): Distinguish supported disc architecture and attachment from the inherited classical contractile-protein claim. The current GO:0097597 definition repeats an older assertion that actinin, alpha-actinin, myosin and tropomyosin drive disc contraction. Hagen et al. 2011 discuss contradictory heterologous-antibody evidence, lack of actin in their disc proteome and absence of a myosin homolog in the then-known Giardia genomes. Hagen et al. 2025 distinguish the early actin-based lateral-crest contraction hypothesis from later localization evidence.
